How do you actually do this? I know how to get a horse character, but bears are new to me.
It's a random event if you have Absurd Events on. More likely to happen if you're Lunatic or Paranoid, less likely if you're Trusting. You can't be at war.
To be honest, not really. Here's a complete list:
Horse M.D. court physician
Glitterhoof
Mittens the Spymaster (cat)
Sex Crusader Kings (you kill the king of the forest and celebrate with one or two women - gives a random trait from among a few selections or kills you)
Marco Polo (a window with "Marco" appears, the option to close it says "Polo," gives 50 Prestige - no connection to the actual Marco Polo)
Bear events
In the game files Absurd Events are referred to as "silly_events", which is pretty apt if you ask me.
Dana Lyons was the Cows With Guns guy. Weird Al had nothing to do with that one.
All the time I've been playing this game and I've never seen any bears. It makes me incredibly sad. I've seen Glitterhoof and Horse, MD several times, but never any of the bears.
Try setting Absurd Events to Unrestricted rather than On so the AI can also get the events, and you'll see one eventually.
You can also bypass this and go directly to an animal-filled world through the Random World generator (requires Holy Fury DLC). One of the easter egg options is to add some animal races (bear, dog, cat, horse, etc) to the mix of human ruling dynasties. Another replaces all the humans with non-human rules. So, if you've ever wanted to play as a French red panda who becomes ruler of the HRE, now you can!
