I lasted less than five minutes before quitting.

I start up a nice, nearly impossible 769 Karen start, get hitched, look over my council, and face palm, literally.

I've got a 17 learning cleric, as my steward. As I look through them, not a single vassal was given a stat appropriate council position. So I fire his ass to start with, only to discover he's not in the list of people I'm eligible to appoint to Mobad. I then checked his original position, I couldn't even put him back there. So I'm stuck with this cranky asshole who wants a position on the council, yet mysteriously isn't eligible for a position on the council, wondering wtf is going on.

Am I missing something hilariously obvious here?

I hate the auto-assigned councilors at the start of the game. Always need to shift them around. And now the "recently fired" malus does't even let us put them back on the seat.

There's a diplo action you can use on councillors to change their position from one to another without having to fire them ( such as moving a marshal to steward and the like.)

This. Managing your council isn't hard, but you will screw stuff up BADLY the first time you play with it. The number of times I accidentally did stuff without council approval and racked up insane amounts of tyranny drove me nuts.

Pro tip: make sure you hold onto ruler title grant approval, the rest you can usually get by with council votes.

IMO the new council mechanics are one of the best additions in the last few years, adding depth and difficulty to managing a realm, particularly for medium-large realms.

It gets worse..wait until your non-educable barony heirs grow up uneducated (conclave wont pick focus for barony level vassals, neither can you) but still demand a place in the council as level 1 illiterate dorks...Im about to roll back to 2.4.5 when i found the compatible mod version haha
This little..mistake ruins your game unless you play with huge kingdoms with tons of educable county-level and above vassals.

yes, with conclave, EL CID would've been a random level-1 dumbass. because barons can¡t choose foci for their sons. Same for all the lowborn italian inventors, mathematicians, etc in some city court thanks to whom we're not living in caves anymore. But, hey, the HRE, historically, a collection of iliterate retards, they get masterminds and midas touched ppl, just because they CAN choose a focus...haha

Again, I doubt they designed it for that purpose. Probably an oversight due to Baron-tier people being unable to choose a personal focus (as they are unplayable etc). Lack of playtesting really.

But that does not happen, does it? if you play earlier than 1066 these characters are not even born and may not actually be born at all, also, what is it supossed to do in this case?

(Edit: mayors don't eve have courts, they are replaced randomly, why are you educating their kids?)

The abstraction does not work like that, any character that is suppossed to be an influential lowborn is represented as an event or premade, that's why you see those event "king dude there's a philosopher, should we ask for his help?" and then you get bonuses or whatevs.

Now, you want to say that your court is not as easy to breed into perfection anymore, and in that case you're right, is not.

I like it, people are not perfect, make it work.

If you're Muslim get imprisonment under your control or those decadent relatives could be hard to lock up. Before I did that I had to take up intrigue focus and get to work cleaning house. Got the nickname "spider" from that.
I'd say get back all the power you can afford to take back. That way if an ultimatum comes at a time when you can't stand against it then you can give up some power and it might be something unimportant like banishment they take control of rather that title grants.
