So I bought Rome in a box instead of on Steam

Most of my Paradox game have been purchased on Steam because I love the Auto-updates and I tend to reinstall my OS often and its nice to have a place to just click install and the game automatically downloads and installs the most recent versions. However, I decided to buy Rome from Best Buy hoping to enter the serial number in steam and have it added, but alas, it won't accept it. Is there any way to link a boxed copy of Rome in with Steam or would I have to repurchase Rome on Steam?

FYI, yes I know many people have strong opinions against Steam, try not to make this discussion about the positives and negatives of Steam, I just want to know if I can do it.

AFAIK it's not possible. But updating is still as simple as opening the launcher and pressing check for updates

Steam got none of your money for that purchase, so no they are not going to allow you to register that game with them. As Wave points out there's no real issue with updates, the game launcher does that for you anyway. And in any case there will be few if any more updates for Rome Gold, so I'd say don't bother buying it on Steam again.

This. I'd expect one more patch at the very most before Rome gets another expansion - if it even does get one.
