Venice attacked an independent Crete circa 1540, which was in my sphere of influence (England). They conquered it before I could intervene. I took Corfu, Crete, Cyprus, and Rhodes from Venice, and then took Venice.

I waned to release these nations as free nations, but could not, other than Crete. These nations have their own cores. So after Cyprus defected, I took Naxos and Rhodes in the peace treaty (3 infamy each).

How do I release these nations? I don't really want them. Do I have to wait for a nationalist revolt? I was hoping to reduce my infamy by releasing these islands as vassals. Or even releasing "Greece."

I'd rather not edit my savegame, can a console command fix this?

A possibly related problem, how do I release Ireland as a Vassal? All I have are the little provinces to release.

You can't release formable countries unless they've been actually formed and have cores on the provinces. For your other question I can only think that you don't have enough core provinces to release Venice?

Nor can you release nations whose state culture is different from the culture in the provinces they have cores on. This applies to Achaea and Cyprus, which have Italian and French state cultures, but Greek province cultures.

I want to release Cyprus, Corfu, and Naxos. They all have Greek culture and their own cores. Knights and Crete are already free (and allied / sphered).
I would love to release them as vassals, or as free states I am allied with (like after winning a war), and not just for the lower infamy.

Cyprus, Naxos, Corfu (and Achaea, the Knights and maybe Epirus, I don't know about Epirus) are crusader states that have Greek cultured orthodox land but are catholic and have lombard/cosmopolitaine/maltese state culture. Unless they managed to convert their provinces to these cultures before dying, they can't be released, as nations cannot be released without territory of their culture. Not even the same culture group counts, you can't release Rheinländer Cologne in Hessian Westfalen.

Usually countries will lose cores on provinces of other culture groups when they are annexed, but if they get annexed in a wrong culture group province, they will keep their cores which is why you can still see those cores.

When a nationalist revolt comes up let them win it will give an automatic core. Or ensure the Byzantines are not on the map and release a large nation instead.

No Byzantines, I started in 1510. I could pound on the Ottomans though, there is a crusade against them.

So I should pull my troops off these island and let them revolt? Will I lose prestige or anything? Will they hate me when they leave? The Wiki says "20 years of local autonomy" if I negotiate, what does that mean?

I love my Bastard Queen Mary Tudor, she is 9/8/9 and a result of the seduction event.

Negotiating with rebels is done in the religion tab - it allows you to remove a rebellion without having to kill the rebels, which is sometimes useful; for example, Lithuania should negotiate with its Smolenskian rebels at the start of the game so it doesn't have to fight them. Local autonomy is a horrendous modifier that makes a province almost useless, but it doesn't matter if you intend to release the province as a vassal once the rebellion is gone. In your case, you most definitely don't want to negotiate with the rebels, but it may be useful to let them capture provinces then take them back by force.

Nationalists can sometimes be very helpful due to the way they place cores on provinces of their culture; for example, playing as Byzantium, I found it useful to allow Umbrian nationalists capture Abruzzi and Romagna after annexing the Papal States and Naples, thereby allowing me to release the three provinces I didn't have cores on as Urbino.
