I'll use Reformed on War focus and you use Orthodox on full Authority.
+20% morale (+15% from War focus + +5% from DoTf)
The only religion better than Reformed for war is Shia, which is +10% morale base, +10% morale full piety (easy to get if you're a monarchy) and +5% from DotF.
vs your +5% morale from only DoTF.

Yeah, that's why I asked. Maybe people aren't playing Orthodox anymore and just remembering it / conceptualizing it. Or maybe they simply had better luck skill than us. I played two games with it in 1.8/1.9 then tossed it aside because who cares about PA when you can only get it through random events and those events rarely pop anyway.
You're only comparing military aspects. Orthodox grants you cheap stability, lower RR, the ability to ignore the Reformation, and not be hated by any other Christian group, and still retaining the ability to form PUs. Patriarchy Authority is candy on top, giving you the ability to increase manpower for long wars of attrition. Or simply to sustain your conquests.
And best of all, you can take it at the 1444 start, instead of having to wait for the Reformation to pop, then go about trying to convert everything/going through religious turmoil.
Stab focus gives -2% national unrest and +1% diplo reputation.
Trade +10% trade power and some amount of steering.
There's no competition.
You may think so, but I heartily disagree. You still have to spend the first 100 years bowing to the pope, while an Orthodox nation can go about doing their things merrily.
There's a fair point that Reformed at full Fervor is better than Orthodox, but there's a big key difference:
You can /start/ orthodox, and you never have to deal with the reformation and changing religion midgame.

Have to agree with Orthodox being nowhere near Reformed. . . changing religion is also so easy I don't see that as being a meaningful point.
Seems to me a major problem people are having is with the RNG of orthodoxy being too demanding.
Perhaps we could see some non-RNG ways to increase our PA? Converting land for 1 PA for example? Winning holy wars?

Technically you can restore the pentarchy and them convest to reformed, can't you?
Never liked it in the first place, and have never stayed Orthodox since I learned how to convert to something else. Even less reasons to bother with it now since you can't claim the Emperorship and your PA slider is so stiff.

Reformed is still King in terms of fervour bonuses. Catholic is great too if you can dominate the curia and grab the catholic empire bonus. England's lollard bonus makes staying Catholic very viable:
