So how can I force-change my own religion in 1.8?

I want to continue my Qing game after the achievement. It's only 1520s so I want to do the Land of Eastern Jade achievement as well. So the problem is to convert Qing to Buddhism. With active missionary and autonomy change I get the Buddhist rebel faction, and the description of Accept Demand says:

1. Buddhism becomes the new state religion
2. Tolerance of true faith -2, heretics +4
3. Missionary strength -10%

So I clicked Accept Demand. And the result is:

I'm staying in Confucianism.
I got the tolerance and missionary effects.

Is this a new bug in 1.8? If it's a new bug, before paradox fit, is there any other way that I can change my own religion? Use of heretic CB to DoW and force religion on myself probably won't work because I'm already too large.

Thanks!

===================
EDIT:

OK so I did some research with console commands.
The "xxx becomes the new state-religion of ..." is always there on the left of Accept Demands.
When the rebel does not represent the dominant religion, the accept demands effects are tolerance and missionary strength changes.
When the rebel represent the dominant religion, the accept demands effect is change to the rebel's religion, no other effects.
Can still use Cleanse of Heresy CB to force self into a religion of the same group, if <100% WS.

Looks like I can't use Qing to do the achievement... I have to stop conquering Ming and get all of Oriat and some southeast Asian lands, or there won't be enough provinces.
This sucks..

You have to have it as the dominant religion. It will say it will become the new state religion regardless, but that is indeed faulty information/buggy UI.

That was the requirement to change religion between groups, like Sunni to Orthodox.
So now it's required for changes within the group as well?

And dominant means most provinces, right? But rebels don't flip the provinces anymore... so essentially the only way is to conquer a lot of provinces from another faith and then let the rebels run rampant?

Rebels still convert provinces they capture :eek:
Code:
	siege_won_effect = {
		if = {
			limit = {
				religion = buddhism
			}
			add_province_modifier = {
				name = "religious_violence"
				duration = 730
			}
		}
		if = {
			limit = {
				NOT = { religion = buddhism }
			}
			change_religion = buddhism
			add_province_modifier = {
				name = "forced_conversion"
				duration = 730
			}
		}
	}
And no, cultural dominance requires you to have more provinces of that culture then others, religious dominance requires you to have more total base tax from provinces of that religion then others (unless that's changed in 1.8, which is technically possible).

If the biggest number of provinces are another religion, including if it's tied, in 1.7 anyway, that's sufficient to accept demands and change religion. Below that threshold it *should* be greyed out and you're stuck with dealing with religious rebels running amuck. Changing versions of the same religion (catholic->reformed, etc) doesn't require (or in 1.7 didn't) supremacy. One would suffice.

Christianity and Islamic religions are the ones with denominations or variations for the latter rule. So Confucianism, Animism, Buddhism, etc are entirely different religions.

Simply conquer a bunch of Buddhist provinces, create a vassal and feed them enough provinces of your own such that Buddhism is the dominant religion, then do a conversion on a high unrest province or 2 and it should suffice to change religions. Do be careful though and watch to make sure it's religious revolts and not peasant so that you don't get an unpleasant surprise.

Not so. Not only have I done a 10v10 swap from Sunni to Orthodox and tax base wasn't the factor but you can see this same thing in a youtube Arumba did where he was trying (and messed up) a world conquest with Orthodox Ottos. In fact, the last time I did an Orthodox Ottos, I went ahead and did city of the world's desire first and then handed Dulkadir a province to equalize.

I stand corrected. I just tested it properly, and you're right.

I guess that does make more sense anyway :p

Thanks for the reply.

I thought about that. It's definitely doable, but just...taking a lot of time sitting there without being able to do anything. Orthodox Otto is more smooth as you don't need to sell too many provinces and you have vassal-to-be-annexed in the beginning. For my current game if I do the trick that's almost like a restart.

Maybe I'll try a Siam game for this...

Yeah, it's sometimes a bit inconvenient because it's better to look at the province list and count up the religions and kind of plot it out beforehand.

Christianity, on the other hand, is a no brainer. I did an Orthodox Sweden just because. You can also do culture switches this way. I've done Greek Ottomans (-6 stability hit) just for the heck of it. You kind of have to do weird things with the Ottos to make them interesting, for me anyway.
