Hang in there and don't give up. You may only lose about 20k cims before your population begins to rise again. Just give it time. It is just like real life where cities commonly lose 20% of their population on a regular basis!

Also, make sure you aren't having traffic issues anywhere. The fact that your buildings are going abandoned indicates that the hearses are stuck in traffic jams. That or you just need more.

Yup just give it time. Your population will plummet for a while, but then start to pick back up again as the dead dudes get cleared out. :p Also, as Person012345 mentioned, make sure you don't have major traffic issues. Cause if you do, the vehicles for your graveyards and crematoriums can't get to the people fast enough, and that could also contribute to the problem.

Look at you Deathcare status. If your available crematory usage is less than the max available it means that your hearses are having traffic problems. If the available usage is at the max you lack sufficient capacity. Dead people will cause abandonment. Then industry will abandon due to lack of workers. Pause the game and find the problem. The problem will creep up on you. It is confusing because capacity(on the right) is the number of hearses available at the crematories while the indicator seems to show the efficiency of the hearses. The left indicator is the number of dead. What you are trying to control is the rate that you pick up the dead. If it isn't fast enough the dead stack up. If it is too fast you are spending too much on Deathcare. That is what I have observed in my own games. I think.

For your screenshots, do you have the Steam overlay turned on? It's my understanding that's needed to make that work.

As for the death thing, yes, this is something either we all have to go through or see someone else go through it before we realize the impact it can have on a city (it's actually kind of great, isn't it? :D). How many cemeteries do you have? Your road lay-out looks like it should be able to handle everything but it is kind of hard to tell for sure just from a screenshot. At the very least I would be placing a few more cemeteries to handle your current disaster, even if you end up emptying them out and turning them off afterward until you need them again.

IMO, this is a bug in the game. Hope they address the issue sooner! Thats not how it works in real-life. You dont see waves of death happening. It happens randomly and consistently. And also I dont want to be troubled because of this aspect in the city. I'd like to have more transport issues like better roadways and public transportation! I do not see any effects of traffic problems in the functioning of ind./commerce, which should be happening.

They'd have to throttle incoming citizen age and randomize age thourg a larger delta.

Also, make life events alter life expectancy for added randomness - i.e. getting sick ticks off the life counter faster until the cim is healed.

The problem actually wouldn't be so bad if the hearses picked up the bodies in a more logical manner. It's not exactly uncommon to see them departing from the cemetery or crematorium, with the intent to pick up the most distant corpse in the entire city.

I find dead bodies a problem as well. Many times the crematoriam is just across the road or down the street!

I also find that police stations, fire brigades, crematoriums etc ... I place them on the map, but they never get started, and when I go back later either after a nearby fire or I notice lots of dead bodies in the area, I check the services, and they are not working at all.

Why? The road is free and traffic can travel both ways. I cannot see the reason?

I just remembered something that happened in a city I don't play all that often. I had laid down some of those four-way roads in the commercial area. Someone died at one of the stores and because those roads have a median that can't be crossed the hearse had a devil of a time trying to get to that business to get the body because it had to drive completely around blocks to get into the correct lane for turning into the business. I now only very rarely use that road, only for reasonably long stretches without zoning. It may not be the case in your city but it's definitely something to watch for.

Do you have any icons flashing above the building? Perhaps you are short of workers, or maybe not connected to electricity?

I have exactly the same problem. Happened to me several times in my game now, and since at first I did not knew of that problem, I added more residential zones to counter the sudden population drop. Now, the next wave is even more critical because it is amplified by the "new" citizens that dies at the same time as the ones that replaced the "old" dead ones.

Just look at those statistics. It is clearly periodic and it gets worse at each wave.

Like said previously, I would rather enjoy traffic / energy issues than death waves. A more intelligent aging system would be welcome

I do agree that the aging system could be more random in a way that all people might have a small chance of dying (accidents, deceased, murder, etc.) at any age and that seniors die at a relatively random age varying between 20% before and 20% after their current age.

But even with the current system it's not too difficult to create a city without this problem. My current city has a steady growth year over year and my birth rate is still higher then my death rate. The reason is that I try not to zone everything at the same time, I take my time to create a city and I don't just build when there is a demand for residential. My city is now a few year old, but there hasn't been any noticeable peaks and/or drops in my population as a whole. There have been drops and peaks in specific districts however, but due to different moments of creating these they tend to compensated for each other.

I keep a city journal to also see these effects so you might take a look. https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/city-journal-green-estuary.850590/
I keep yearly statistics of the city and will soon post a more detailed update of the statistics over a 10-year period.

Cities skylines is a very forgiving game, almost all problems can be solved by maxing the speed and doing nothing at all. This problem included.

But I do agree a bit more randomness in dead would be nice.
