If you are playing with 25% habitability and not the largest galaxies, a lot changes. As planets get more rare - damn, 25-tile planets are few and precious - you can't simply find few Gaia worlds to produce all that energy that you could get from Dyson sphere.

However, its cost still seems damn high, as does it build time. Considering it is pretty endgame stuff, that long build time... well, most games have stopped being interesting at that point. It seems like when you can finish this, you've already won, which makes it a bit pointless. I do hope they reconsider the numbers in future patches, or at least scale these thing to galaxy size.

Maybe you play a pacifist empire and you have nowhere else to expand?

As a pacifist you should be "content with what you have" and "unwi. Expanding should NOT be something you want to do ... because that would be "taking away stuff from others". That is one of the things I dont understand, because pacifists get extra core systems (=more expanding ability) which doesnt make sense.

Um, what? Pacifists don't want war, I assume they're quite happy to expand into empty space racing other empires to do so.

it may as well be an endgame goal.
i remember we've played a game with a mod that was adding a titan ship... but you need to research a lot of techs to build it. and me, and my friend were rushing it to see who will build it first? same thing can happen to wonders.
because that would be "taking away stuff from others".
huh? noooooo. pacifists are ok with taking stuff from others. - protectorate, vassalization, liberation wars and etc...

Equating pacifist with "doormat with no ambition" is just horribly wrong.

The onlything it means is that this empire does not see war as one of its first tools for solving any given problem. As a paficist empire you should look towards expanding into empty space, forming diplomatic connections second and only resort to war if other options aren't available.

It's perfectly within the scope of a pacifist empire to declare war on an empire that is belligerent, aggressive and a danger to its continued existence, for example.

Dyson spheres become even better if you've evolved to synth bodies, feel like building synth colonists, start the game as an artic planet preference race, or acquire one to colonize the planets you freeze with said dyson sphere making the system fairly decent. In fact if you are artic planet pref Dyson sphere is just free terraforming.

Can't you just use it on a completely dead system though? Depending on map size, games can go on "very long". Dumping your excess minerals whenever you cap out during certain phases into it might be worthwhile as you use stuff you otherwise wouldn't use to permanently increase overall production.

Pretty sure they don't freeze to one of the habitable planet types. After all there's cold, then there's literally 0 Kelvin.

I wouldnt get too discouraged. Most of this stuff only really matters in competitive Multiplayer. In either singleplayer or casual Multiplayer with friends you really dont need to worry about it too much. A few people have also shown that for a tall empire it can absolutely be worth it.

Besides, if theres one thing watching invader zim has taught me is that you dont build giant megastructures because theyre economical. You build them because theyre cool ;-)

Yeah, there is a difference between "artic" and "horrible frozen hell from which no warmth can escape". ^^

Im pretty sure you guys are right but ima try this as a test run and see if Dyson sphere causes planets to become 'barren' instead of just 'artic'.
A man can hope. *chuckle* Also if I am right then I hope it gets patched.

You forgot the mod to give habitats space stations, at which point that system would probably become 'fleet central'. Just the one system or one of a few systems you go to and que up fleet production amongst all the various stations in that system. And of course such a valuable system will also have every possible space filled with defense systems as well making it look crowded.

I'm already waiting to have like 8 or 9 habitable somethings in a system and then have a fleet jump in. :p

I really wish having multiple snares in a system allowed you to pull apart massive doom stacks. *chuckle*
ie - suddenly that 100k fleet is now 4x 25k fleets and only one has an admiral.

Granted if that was a thing I get the feeling having disposable ships to send in one after another to pop snares would become a strat.

To be honest +400 energy credits does seem a bit lackluster for something which costs that much (including the star system). Depending on cost it may well be better to just build a ringworld and dedicate one or two of the sections to energy, another to science and unity to make up the deficit due to the increased number of planets + population and one more to the food, minerals and energy needed to upkeep the population and buildings.

Numbers are mightier than the sword - unless maybe if it was a sword made up of really impressive numbers.

It's a plus 2. Is that suitably impressive?

Eh. We're still early in Stellaris lifecycle, so I guess plus 2 is suitably mighty.

You better work on that for post Utopia, though. At least add "of smiting".
