Which does nothing for the majority of players (per steam stats PDS posted) who either can't or don't want to play strictly multiplayer.

@zopok Many customers feel your pain. The only thing I can say is since you have already bought the game, wait and see what the next patch does. But at this point without a huge improvement in balance and game play in 1.3 I won't be investing another penny into HOI4 (I do not pre-pay for DLC - learned my lesson long ago). After 3 patches a game should be out of advanced beta player testing. I can understand a limited AI, but an AI that makes Gomer Pyle look like a military genius is absurd.

You're right Meglok. Hope the next patch will have erased all those silly thinks, otherwise we have to be patient until the release of HoI V .

I had posted many of these concerns a few weeks ago. Jacked up AI that we're made to rely on, broken battle planner, lack of individual naval and air movement, etc. That post got 6 "respectfully disagrees". That's funny in a sad kind of way.

I will go instantly have a look on your observation about it. :) How do I get there?

At the start of the European war Germany will start destroying its manpower base in WW1 type battles against massive Dutch and Belgian army's. I keep and eye on that area--regardless of which alliance I'm with. As soon as the great mess begins, I tag switch to each nation and eliminate what I deem to be excess units--there are masses of those. The same situation arises with the start of the war with the USSR. (which can start anytime--even in the middle of winter). Prior to the patch it seemed like Japan would always crush China in short order--now it seems to go the other way. If one wants a historical start to the war years, it is a bit frustrating to see China (and its full blown ally, PRC) stomp the hell out of Japan and taking all but the home islands. So, the same procedure is needed in the far east. If you try to manipulate the AI like this, don't forget about units being created--delete those too.

The other place to watch out is the Sahara. Without the mods that prevent this, the AI will send massive amount of troops right through the desert to attack rear areas. So, it's the same procedure there too--tag switch and delete. This sort of behavior by the AI can be easily exploited, but maneuvering hundreds of thousands of soldiers through a sand sea is not my idea of a WW2 war game.

So, there is no hope? You mean that I have to go back playing HoI III ? :(

You could say this is bad AI. However, you could also say this is great AI on behalf of the Dutch and Belgians, because they manage to defend their countries at least fo a while. In my game, some Dutch and Belgian units held out in Rotterdam until May '41 or so. Is that historical? No, but you could say the (Dutch and Belgian) AI is putting up a good fight as well. Not every game needs to have the superior German ubermenschen steamroll all of Europe, or is that what you want to see?

I watched a "roundtable discussion" on HOI3 and 4 on YouTube recently, and one of the people discussing observed that the devs focused on one thing for HOI3 (army organisation and OOB) and one thing for HOI4: production. I hadn't thought of it that way, but he had a point. The OOB/COC system was really deep and complex in 3, while production was just "tell all your factories to make you an infantry division, and it shall be done". Whereas in 4, there basically is no order of battle/chain of command beyond "assign this whole front to one commander", while the production system has you produce equipment and vehicles in a system that's fun and challenging to organise.

That said, you always have to differentiate between stuff that's meant to be that way, and things that will be fixed by patches.

So, there is no hope? You mean that I have to go back playing HoI III ? :(
Wait for patches. HOI3 was a wreck when released, and really fun after sufficient patches.

I was asking myself that question. I have found no other solution than to go back to HOI 3 with the mod of my choice and play.
Your test just confirmed what I was suspecting. Mods cant change that game.
They may change aspects of the game but not its basic characteristics.

To me that means HOI4 will never have:
supply
OOB
halfway proper air and/or naval warfare
proper counters that dont mix when zoomed out
provinces with names
ledger
messages
minimaps
etc....

Thats a lot of missing features I (and I think many old school gamers) like to see in a strategic game.
I dont think they will come back in HOI4.
Its somehow sad but I guess we have to accept that P´dox has dramatically changed and thinks nowadays very different than we grognards about strategic games.

I was just thinking about this as I completed Fall Weiss. Took me exactly one month incidentally. Even with BICE, things fall flat when the war kicks off IMHO. The build-up is frankly the best part of HOI4 - and I don't mind the complexity BICE brings to this; in fact, once all the tech trees and NF trees get sorted, it will be highly enjoyable in that respect. HOI3 on the other hand, while not great in the build-up, was very rewarding in the battle execution. Just my opinion of course but no OOB really hurts the immersion. Relying on the battle planner is also frustrating for a micro-manager like myself. I basically had three armies and told each one to head to Warsaw. If any one of them bogged down, I threw a couple tanks at it. That was it really. When I think back to my first TRP game for HOI3, I remember how tough of a slog it was taking down Poland. I played on the slowest setting and fought tooth and nail. It was intensely rewarding. That Polish campaign lasted almost exactly one month as well but which one do you think I'll remember?

I certainly hope the upcoming patches will really dive into the meat and potatoes of the game. Right now it feels like the game is designed more for multiplayer where decisions have to be made quickly and actions streamlined. Thing is, I'm playing a single player, pausable real-time strategy game where the details matter, or at least they should.

In this current state, I will not spend time in the game any more.
After a more or less plausible start-up (Germany), things will fall apart and when the usual nonsense starts I quit.
So I decided to waste my time elsewhere ;).

As stated very, very often here in the forum, PDX has to do something fundamental with the game mechanic and logic.
Until that happens, I will only follow some discussions here. More interessting than the game itself :D.

Map... Why the need to make a 3D looking map? You can't tell montains, hills or desert apart in some places. Or other terrain. Need a simple terrain mode and need a political map mode and need a flat world.
I agree that you can't tell what the terrain is, but I disagree on the 2D map solution. Check out the mods "better terrain view", "better political map" and "no fog of war" all together. They really make a huge difference, it's so much better that way.

Yeap, simply HOI4 is not worthy its price. It is a game you can only play for week maybe a month. Dev should be change that fast of this is going to be game that you can only play with mods and we all now mods can't save the game. Don't make another HOI3 mess.

You make a point, Safe-Keeper, but anyway I notice:

HoI3 a complicated game ? Yes... for a young public but certainly not for adults like we are. And that's make of HoI a hit with a public who wish to stay between adult and not with a myriad of kids that does not make a difference between HoI an "Assassin's Greed".

Complicate?... Perhaps but, take for example BI... Well, this mod makes not only the immersion in WW2 more accurate, but also makes the management more harder which does not prevent the mod to have a great success.
I think that the designers wanted to reach a younger public that, on the contrary of an adult one, is more attracted by arcades type games on detriment to authenticity of a good WW2 simulationin game.

In these conditions, way not play Risk or Axis and Allies?

Pffff ... What a pity!

one question: ( excuse my ignorance) but I have a doubt about the OOB definition? Is this Order of Battle?

In this current state, I will not spend time in the game any more.
After a more or less plausible start-up (Germany), things will fall apart and when the usual nonsense starts I quit.
So I decided to waste my time elsewhere ;).

As stated very, very often here in the forum, PDX has to do something fundamental with the game mechanic and logic.
Until that happens, I will only follow some discussions here. More interessting than the game itself :D.

I cannot say that you are wrong... stay in touch!
