Many of the reviewers (e.g. PC Gamer) have mention that they were frustrated at the fact that they felt railroaded down the path of sticking with the faction they originally picked. That they had no options to undermine their faction from the inside, even when it seemed like a logical opportunity.

But apparently, there were indications by the developers that it would be possible to change sides, or to go neutral and not stick with any of them.

What's the actual situation?

You can betray a faction and go at it on your own on the rebel ending, from conversations later in the game dealing with the Chorus and Disfavored, I'd guess it's possible to change form one to other at certain points. I dont believe that you can go from rebels to loyalists or vica versa, nor anarchist to anything else.

I had an option at the end of Chapter 1 to reject the group I had allied with, tho' I didn't take it so I don't know what would have happened.

Yes, I've just finished Chapter 1 and have seen options to favor one faction but also choices to improve standing with the other at risk of worsening my reputation with my current alliance. There is a dialogue option where I said to a party member I wanted to crush both the Chorus and the Disfavored although there was no reputation points attached to this. Sometimes the options are quite overwhelming.

Is it possible to please both the Disfavored and the Chorus?
From what I have seen no.

Big spoilers Spoilers!!!

After piecing together dialogue and letters. What it looks like to me so far this was intentional by kyros going by the solo path when you kick to the curb, chorus, disfavored and rebels kyros knew that they could not work together and most likely set them on this path so the weaker archon could get taken out. Also possibly something new may come about(you) I have not finished the game yet but it looks like it's going in that direction. Since the path I am on they make the point that if Kyros wanted you dead he/she could of killed you ANY time she or he wanted. Leading to me this whole thing is kyros going "Just as planned."
