I found HOI3 to be incredible. Nothing like it on the market. But then, I do a lot of modding and do not expect historical results.

AoD is also a beautiful game. And that's from someone who never loved vanilla HOI2. But if I had to chose--it would be AoD!

I've seen HOI3 on sale as low as $5, so you really should wait for another sale and get both. Half the fun of both these games is reading the excellent info posted on these forums.

Best!

HoI3 has gotten a lot better with patches, but there are still a lot of glaring problems. Whether or not they are game-breakers depends on who you ask, but no one here can honestly say it doesnt have at least a few serious problems. AoD is much more polished, and feels like a natural evolution of HoI2. I would recommend waiting on HoI3 until the final 1.4 patch is released at least, and realistically until an expansion comes out. I have no doubt Johan and co. will make an awesome game out of HoI3, but it isn't there yet, and if I had to recommend just one, it would be AoD.

HoI is still in need of a lot of work and it's a product that I am very unhappy with do to it's radically unhistorical nature, horrid AI and lousy interface. Still, a lot of people love the free wheeling nature of it, enjoy the new features and hope it will one day become a stable, fast game with a good AI. If that sounds appealing to you then buy it.

AoD is basically a drastically improved version of HoI2DD which is to say it's the best WWII grand strategy game around. The flaws are minor, it's cheap, runs great and it's easily modded. I'd say give it a shot.

HOI3 is the best WW2 computer game I have ever played, even with a few bugs. (And I can say that I was playing computer games when most players were not even born, when 64K was all a designer had to work with). To say it is unplayable is simply unbelievable, and must reflect more on the player than the game. Go to the HOI3 AAR threads and tell me that it can't be played. Since its release I have probably clocked up several hundred hours of play, and have enjoyed every single one.

Maybe after all these years I don't expect every game to be exactly what I anticipate or would like. I take every game as it is, and just see if it is enjoyable. I loved HOI3 from day one and it just gets better.

It is probably not fair to comment on AOD yet, as I haven't put in more than 4-5 hours. It seems OK, and has a few interesting ideas that I think most gamers will enjoy. However it is still seems basically HOI2, a game that I was still playing up unitil Sept 09, but only when heavily modded. But I find I miss many things from HOI3 too much for AOD to replace it.

Overall I would say HOI3 way in front, but with AOD a steady competitor. I suspect AOD modders will be quicker of the mark and some really great mods will breath more life into it.

Please keep comments civil and factual - I have already experienced the anti-HOI3 flamers on other threads - I don't what it is but some people seem to get quite worked up on the subject, even though after analysing hundreds of their messages I still can't see why. Nobody is making you play it, and if it is some kind of anger because you have "wasted" money by buying it: I have thrown out literally hundreds of games that I bought, played a few hours and relegated to the back of the computer desk. It happens, it will always happen. Concentrate on the gems you find, not on the overburden you have to remove.

Thanks for reading, and I hope everyone continues to enjoy Paradox games. (I have to admit I never finished a HOI1 game - just couldn't get into it - but never posted a negative post. Lots of people loved it, just not me)

I think people get worked up because they loved HoI2 and are very passionate about it, and then HoI3 came and it was a complete fuckup, in their opinion anyway.

I'm one of those people. I also have some friends that loved HoI2 and they agree, the sequel did a lot more things bad than it did good. It just doesn't have the same soul and the same fun, it gets too bogged down in trying to be realistic and limiting gameplay, the threat system is retarded for instance, if I'm a dictator then I'm in charge but no, there's some metaphysical barrier that prevents me from doing what I want.

There's also the 3D engine that's incredibly bad, sluggish and generally not nearly as fast as its predecessor was. Another step backwards.

See how easily I get worked up? Yeah.

I've played AoD for a bit and so has a good friend of mine. We agree that it has a lot of good ideas, but some of the new things are annoying or plain bad compared to HoI2. Still eons better than HoI3 though.

I think there is really no need to sum up all HOI3 flaws here, there is an entire forum dedicated to that. However, given that even the devs themselves have aknowledged that HOI3 is, at least in part, a flawed product, I don't think that calling it unplayable it's wrong. I mean, I cannot play it in this form for sure. I am not saying that it cannot be enjoyed at all, I know a lot of people that do like playing it, but I don't know if they are a majority.

HOI 3 has taken on such a challenge, and just like HOI 2, has fallen short with some of the more ostentatious features,

AOD is based on HOI 2 with many elements of DD and ARM included, so indeed is a far more polished product,

but to answer your question, AOD as of right now, but HOI 3 will be a magnificent game when an expansion is developed for it, Patch 1.4 is a step forward, but too many issues that fall outside the scope of a patch unfortunately, and modders can only do so much with the redundant files.

I've concluded that opinions on HoI3 simply can't be reconciled because it's radically different then what a lot of people want. For some folks it runs great and they like the new features. Personally I am not one of those people but it's great that they like HoI3 and I am delighted that AoD offers what it does instead.

What about people who like the new features of HOI3, but hate how they were executed? I loooove the idea of true chain of command, and being able to be more like a supreme commander by giving orders and letting my "subordinates" carry them out. I hate that this is rather busted, though. Paradox is a very small company. Throughout the development of HOI3, I read all the dev diaries, saw all the grand ideas, and hoped that they'd work as intended. Obviously they bit off more than they could chew. I don't think that even expansions will truly fix HOI3, but I'm confident that they'll take their time and make HOI4 great. That doesn't mean that I'm going to pre-order the game like I did for HOI3 (fool me once...), but I'm optimistic.

AOD is a wonderfully polished game that is the culmination of over 5 years of improvements on HOI2. It's better almost by definition.

Also, to the people that gush over HOI3. Please, please, pleeease teach me how enjoy it, because I'm struggling with that right now.

Out of interest, what are your AOD gripes?

+1 The HOI3 HQ AI system has the potential to be truly groundbreaking. It provides, for me, the strategy game I have always wanted. Which is why I still play HOI3 despite all its flaws.

To counterbalance it, I need the fix of a stable, user intuitive game, and am on the verge of pressing the buy button for AOD. What's stopping me is this feeling that I will buy and think "why did I bother, I got 95% of this with HOI2 Arma". Have people had that feeling, or is this game more of a 20% improvement type enhancement?

What's the point of asking "HoI3 od AoD" in the AoD section of the forum? :p

For me it's AoD, naturally. I think that HoI3 will need an expansion pack or two to become fun to play, at which point it will most likely surpass AoD, sort of like EU3 was only really good after IN. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy AoD. :)

Well, over in the HOI3 forum, a lot of people would recommend AoD actually. HOI3 is not on the best of terms with its community.

I expect HOI3 will be a great game someday, after an expansion and several patches for said expansion pack. Thats what it took for HOI2 lets not forget. But right now, HOI3 can't really compete with AOD.

I hope one day the AoD team will build a game on top of HOI3. I love AoD where you see the hard work which has gone in every little detail to make this a great game. But I also love the new features in HOI3 like the AI control, the command structure, the many provinces (well for this many more the AI control has to work really well) and the brigade structure.

I think AoD has proven already, that the development team deserves a chance from Paradox to get their hands on the HOI3 source code if they want to.

Well, I can honestly say that the first feeling you get with AoD is one of deja-vu - and that's normal, being the game in fact an enhancement of HoI2 and not a completely "new" product.
But when you start playing a bit, get accustomed with the new features, discover how much effort has been put into this project to completely overhaul HoI2 gameplay, you end falling in love with it, and don't understand how could have you played ol' HoI2 for such a long time :) .

The question posed by this thread is akin to "what is better, being handed a fistful of Euro notes or getting a sharp stick in the eye?"

How could AOD NOT be better? And in fact it is - in the limited time I have had available to play it.
