I started as Count Roger of Reggio and Messina. I conquered Palermo then the rest of the island. Then the North African onslaught began. I was pulling in about 9g/month so I had a nice warchest. My character lived to the ripe age of 77, I switched to a-c primo, so my eldest daughter inherited, whom I had married to Duke Roger, my nephew. Their son is an idiot, though. The counts on the mainland keep rebelling, and the only way that the realm has survived is because I keep about 1500-2000 mercenaries in the field most of the time fighting North Africans. Uncle Roger has saved the day numberless times. I took much of Tunis and am now conquering Tripoli to keep them off my back. Even Cyrenaica got into the mix trying to conquer Sicily.

My biggest concerns are if Kabylia (a monster with land in Iberia and controlling most of the Maghreb between Morocco and western Tunisia) and sharing a land border with the Caliphate, which has gone nuts conquering the Byzantines and taking a lot of Turkish territory. When the middle-aged Matilde dies, I will win the ducal throne, form the kingdom of Sicily, then institute inheritance by seniority (I think). I may pledge to the Byzantines. The German emperor is too aggressive to make my liege. I'm not sure yet. It's a scary world out there. :)

I've already played some games in Sicily, and definitely I dont support at all the idea of becoming vassal of the HRE. Anyway, to achieve good things is not as hard as some people say.

In my most played game, I started as Count of Napoli (changing his culture to Egyptian in the savegame. Just for rolegame), and instead became a vassal of the HRE. When I could hire mercs enough, I conquered Sicily withouth problems, and waited until it started to give me a good income. Later, I got money, money, more, and MORE money until I could declare war on Egypt, and took Alexandry. Later I requested the Pope to invade Apulia, and became soon the king of Sicily. Later I became also king of Egypt.

The problem? The kaiser took himself the liberty of helping me. And by helping me, I mean that he started to conquer a lot of territories which I wanted sooner or later, and which I couldnt get because of the crown power (no wars between vassals). Here was when I started to make reloads, reloads, and MORE RELOADS. It is fucking hard to become independent of the HRE, I couldnt even do it when the whole Italy, Bohemy and some German duchy tried to do the same. I abandoned the game and started a new one.

The HRE when I left:

...And my territory:

My conclusion: to become a vassal of the HRE is an option, but not the best one. As far as I played, it's possible to defeat those annoying africans as Apulia by hiring mercs and good management.

@Azkaban

It is so easy to implode the HRE anytime you want once you get enough money. If you are floating around 1k+, you can keep assassinating emperors until one is a child with bad stats.

Will post pictures of how easy it is in a second.

Update: My dynasty now owns England, Sicily, Hungary, Croatia, Toulouse, Anjou, Cyrencia, Jerusalem and Rome. And as promised, I spanked HRE around and gained independence(with the help of angry HRE vassals).

Here's the little guy crying for mercy:

edit2: apparently my cousin is having trouble in England, and I forgot to mention all of England is heretic xD.

I just checked, you were right. However, I managed badly the lands of my vassals and some dukes declared war on me for the throne of Sicily... ...And the 1 year old new kaiser was also assesinated, not by me, but for the next pretender. I had very bad luck in those aspects. I'll watch it out next time. ...Even If I still rather not to being a vassal of him :p
