First of all, i must say, that i understand that everything shown in stream is WiP, hot-code, etc..., but i still think i should raise some question about Authoritarian vs. Egalitarian Empire types.

1) The first thing i noticed is that about of starting resource gain is almost equal for both Empires, one have one more energy, and other have one more mineral. But internally they are very different. One is happy (even before factions), they second is not so because....

2)... Caste system looks very strange and contradictory. I got the core idea - it was voiced in Stream - "Your POP will be auto-enslaved based on tile it's working on, so you can forget about them". The problem is that you can't. Your enslaved POPs are quite unhappy right from the start. It makes sense, as they are enslaved, but don't make sense if they are a caste. Sure, not everyone are happy about they status in Caste system, but isn't it a reason to start a faction about abolishing it? And if someone is unhappy by their caste, shouldn't others be happy about their higher status? Current system feels like feudalism with unhappy serfs and "content" free POPs (artisans, scientists, etc) with top elite not being represented at all. And POPs being unhappy leads us to...

3) They need to be suppressed right from the start even on Homeworld. You need to build armies to do so. Not only those cost minerals, they also cost energy to maintain. So it further reduce the advantage of having slaves and slavery system - lesser consumption of general goods is nullified. That leads us to...

4) ... Authoritarian Empire seems not to have any upper hands in resource production at all. Some additional minerals are wasted on armies, energy is crippled by armies maintenance and less overall production. Even food is in red zone - granted, it was partially because of lack of food tiles and not yet implemented global food system - if i get that they saying - it's around 1 hour mark in Stream (and yes, i remember +10% food bonus for Leader of Egalitarian Empire ). But even with all those things in mind, Happy Egalitarian POPs outproduce unhappy enslaved ones on food (and don't require armies to keep unrest in check).

5) Slavery also hammers Unity production a lot. Ofc, you have Traditions to deal with (and some way to cheese them, mentioned in stream :) ), it's still bad because it somewhat dictate that Traditions you should go for, while Egalitarians are free as a bird in their choices.

6) Even the former glory of Slavery - free and easy conquest isn't with us anymore. Even if our own POPs are so unruly, i'm afraid to imagine how hard it would to deal with them. And their cost seems to be huge, both in Tradition and Science. And along with it, you have a whole Tradition tree, that allow you to suck you vassals dry and integrate them later, without dealing with their furious POPs. So you don't have to conquer neighbors - just liberate\vasalize them.

So all things above was taken from the Stream. My post may sounds bitter and as if i demanding Authoritarians to be buffed, but in fact, all i want is a discussion on how Authoritarian should work in your opinion and maybe Wiz can chip in and share his vision of Authoritarian\Egalitarian balance.

Oh, as always i forgot to add a paragraph.

I spotted that even with one Homeworld planet with slaves and one fresh colony, attraction of Egalitarian ethics is almost on the same level of Authoritarian (if i recall right it was 28 vs 20). Even if POP themselves aren't a problem, the factions they going to form surely will against my Empire principles. Suppression is always with you, i know, but how hard they are going to impart overall politics?

Given the "conquer-enslave-conquer-enslave" snowballing that's been pretty popular as a method of painting the galaxy, some difficulty in doing so seems reasonable. Like, yeah... an Authoritarian slave-state is going to need a higher investment in domestic military forces, who would have guessed!

Given the "conquer-enslave-conquer-enslave" snowballing that's been pretty popular as a method of painting the galaxy, some difficulty in doing so seems reasonable. Like, yeah... an Authoritarian slave-state is going to need a higher investment in domestic military forces, who would have guessed!
Now you can vasslaize-integrate-vassalize-integrate, even without fast "integrate" part, it feel quite strong. Because having slaves (even domestic ones) don't feels like a bonus (again, from than i got from Stream). Traditions and science both feels very important and already hammered by expansion (in any form). I mean, it feels like without proper traditions and proper techs (that lowers army cost, f.e.) all your early conquest will bring really nothing. Which seems fair, i must admit (because i too, don't like early rush), but i don't think that making domestic slaves so hard to manage is right. It all boils down to gain vs. invested resources - if they require so much to mange (and we yet to see a slave faction, and how hard is to deal with it) they better to give us an upper hand in something, that, IMO, isn't quite there.

And on the side note of "conquer-enslave-conquer-enslave". You don't have to be Authoritarian to do so. Being Xenophobe will suffice. And it also allow you to Egalitarian at the same time. :rolleyes:

The main advantage of an Authoritarian empire is in mineral production. Slaves get a bonus to it *and* have reduced consumer goods use, and Caste System ensures optimal pop placement on tiles. The effects are fairly small to begin with (any large advantage in the first years of game would not be good) but once you stack some slave bonuses and Consumer Goods cost starts increasing due to the size of your empire, it's a different story. The price you pay is always having to deal with some unrest, but that's just the cost of doing business, and the amounts aren't nearly as bad as a fully enslaved planet under Xenophobes.

I see your point but I think it's way too early to judge whether both types are balanced, how would a egalitarian empire go to integrate pops of different ethoses? The authoritarian government can simply enslave and hold them at gunpoint, the egalitarian has to find another way for example.

Do you know it doesn't pay off? Or is that supposition?

It's supposition. People love to look at one number from unreleased content and make sweeping predictions about how the entire game balance will turn out.

The main advantage of an Authoritarian empire is in mineral production. Slaves get a bonus to it *and* have reduced consumer goods use, and Caste System ensures optimal pop placement on tiles. The effects are fairly small to begin with (any large advantage in the first years of game would not be good) but once you stack some slave bonuses and Consumer Goods cost starts increasing due to the size of your empire, it's a different story. The price you pay is always having to deal with some unrest, but that's just the cost of doing business, and the amounts aren't nearly as bad as a fully enslaved planet under Xenophobes.
So, the basic idea is to equalize initial growth speed for Authoritarian and Egalitarian Empires, and make their differences to appear later. And if someone want to speed up their growth\science\ or something else in yearly game, he should do it though Traditions and not from Empire ethics? Interesting, really looking forward to try it.

On the side note, could you, please, share some info about global food system?

he says right away in the first line he knows it's hot code and a WIP, would you rather we just didn't make any guesses or try to discuss what's been seen?

the main reason that you go around conquering planets is to expand your borders. Especially if you are hyper lanes...not to increase production.

Long term there needs to be a galactic ocean or neutral area that enables interaction without war. E.g trade in eu4.

Umm not actually.... I conquer to produce. I play on 25% habitable planets so every planet is a material bump in potential output.

Edit: FE planet for example are a goldmine for conquer-n-enslave

Regarding Authoritarian Empires:
Do I understand it right, that unlike the old collectivist empire an authoritarian empire does not allow me to purge xenos? Xenos can only be purged as Xenophobe empire?

To be honest, I don't like this change at all, because it defies my rp, i did as collectivist/spiritual empire. I liked to rp an empire that allows a handfull of species to follow the one and only believe and purges all the other xenos. :(

If I remember the tooltip right the authoritarian ethos allows displacement. So you can still have you pure empire.
