If a province is beset by a smallpox epidemic, can the effects target specific people -- for example, the Count or other courtiers in that province?

I just recovered a province from a rebellious vassal, and I'd like to install my duke's son as Count of that province. But would that be putting my heir right in the path of smallpox and a possible early death?

Also, how long does such a plague typically last? Can I just wait a few months and reasonably expect it to go away?

As far as I know, your ruler is not in any greater risk of getting a decease from being in a smallpox province. The plague is different I believe, though not sure about that either.

It can last years ... but it will eventually die out, so you just have to be patient.

Thanks, Tempest, sounds like I can proceed with normal plans for that province. As for the bubonic plague, I'm still in the early stage of the campaign, around 1110, so it is a long way off yet. I presume that all bets are off once the black death arrives, but that problem will be for another day.

Just remember that any improvements started during the disease will last 900% longer, even after the disease disappears. So in case you started something, it is better to cancel it once the smallpox goes away and restart.

Do you mean that the construction time is 10x longer? Yikes!

Yep .. but only if you start it while the province has a disease trait. If you started it before, it wont be affected as far as I remember.

So if you start building during a smallpox the construction will be as slow after the smallpox ?

And btw, in my 2nd game (my Welsh game failed soon due to a error) a smallpox hit my capital (Orkney) and lasted for years. Is that normal ?

Sadly, yes. It's quite annoying when your most important lands are riddled with disease. It'll disappear eventually, though.

OK. I guess it makes sense. Taxation and production would take some time to recover from a disease such as smallpox.

And btw, I forgot to ask. After the smallpox the dominant culture in Orkney chanced to Scottish (from Norwegian. So were the Norse just unlucky and more of them died so they were no longer a majority ?

AFAIK, the culture change had nothing to do with the pox. But I´m not one hundred percent certain.

Probably not. Is Orkney under Kingdom of Scotland? That is a big modifier on the event, and there are a few others. But not disease.

Not at the time. I was still part of Norway.

And btw, later I joined Scotland due to the Norse-Hungarian war and because I found out my ruler half-brother was the king of Scotland. I thought I would benefit from joining. After a few years Scotland had a war with France and I got a claim on the throne of Scotland (since my rival, my nephew, was the king of Scotland) and I almost managed to become king. When my rulers son became king and lost most of the power I decided to quit.

Over all, a quite good starting game.
