Smaller Country Challenges

Having played France nearly to death, I'm starting to get the itch to try something different.

In EU3 I played Castille a lot, and also played a bit of Milan, and one or two of the not impossible small HRE member (forget which).

Have never played anything outside Europe and not particularly interested too, Europe is just such an interesting 'tinderbox' of strife

What small nations have you guys played that you found intriguing or what do you think might be intriguing?

By this I mean: a nation that is 5 or less provinces, but not in a situation that is nearly impossible or will involve centuries of fast forwarding.

I was contemplating Saxony, they seem to have promise.

The Papal State. Join the HRE and you have something like -11 revolt chance after unlocking a couple NIs. Take religious and you will have no rebels in a Catholic province ever.

Also, Tuscany, for massive tech discounts. For extra challenge, never switch government.

The best small nations to play would be Brandenburg in the HRE, or one of the Italian minors in the HRE. Tuscany, is a fun one. Venice is small, but powerful. Naples would probably be one of the most challenging in Italy. They start in a PU with Aragon and have a lot of bad provinces.

Since you limit it to Europe:

-Brandenburg is a fun, easy game, but you knew that.
-Tuscany or Milan can be fun for an Italian spin.
-I like the Palatinate when I feel like a random Imperial minor; you start as an elector, but your lands are separated. You have your own unique ideas (which vary from the awesomeness of +relations to the why? of +rebel support efficiency) and you can quickly find yourself on the front lines between Burgundy/France and the HRE.

Brandenburg gets military boosts is it?

Brandenburg's national ideas are the strongest (militarily) in the game, with +army tradition, +morale, +infantry combat ability, +manpower and +discipline.

They're also a tier 1 nation, so they get lots of unique events/decisions.

Brandenburg, Papal States, and Genoa were a lot of fun for me.

Most HRE internal states play very similarly but can be fun.

If you ever play outside of Europe, the Indian region is also politically diverse and confrontational.
