Small diplomat time question

Anyone noticed how if you have game paused, and send a diplomat somewhere, it may say "2 days" until they return. Then when you start running, it goes down to 1, before jumping up to 2 again and then decrease. In other words, it is one day more than it says.

Any reason why?

I dont know. Always made me wonder why it does this, ever since the game came out
