I think there is a lot that could be changed in the research department to make it better, but this is not the way to do it. The system as it is works just fine, if something were to be changed, it should probably be part of a major expansion, not something small.

Being able to "Cherry Pick" Techs would just lead to a base Meta. To avoid that, any Tree would have to be constructed such that "filler" stuff would need to be positioned such that "direct Teching" to whatever you wanted asap would prove just as "sketchy" if you don't like the current randomized system so no farther ahead.

The OP's idea, as far as I could glean from it would allow you to pick a Tech type, say lasers and when done, you get 2 picks per slot. Go forward with Laser 2 or draw a Card for another Tech in that same discipline.

So instead of 3 choices across 3 disciplines, you could conceivably get 6 choices across 3 disciplines. Keep on with current, or stop and change tracks, rinse and repeat... A quasi "cherry picking" format but to make that actually work, way more Laser picks would need to be made available (like Small Laser 1 -> 5, then Medium Laser 1 -> 5 etc etc.), thus way more work for the DEV breaking down each Tech type into just basically smaller segments. ;)
