Just as a heads up, there are also some things you can accidentally do to make the game slow down horribly, but things that won't persist if you restart the game and such. One example I'm talking about is forgetting to change map-mode back and leaving it on opinion map-mode, that gets extremely laggy on large galaxies. That one had me scratching my head for a while.

Lucky you, at least you have options.
When I switch to fastest in multiplayer it runs as it is slow game speed... :-/

When I play with good hosts with good upload speeds now, and people with OK internet and pc-systems the multiplayer games run insanly fast on fastest compared to earlier. No doubt about that.

Also there is something wrong with full screen mode that makes the game run slow. Which is particularly stupid because if you set the game to windowed mode with a window size equal to the resolution of your monitor it looks the same as full screen but plays faster.

And the game must have some logic that chooses to switch modes because when I started using a new monitor (changing from hdmi to displayport as well) it put the game into full screen mode automatically. I had to go and change it back to get better performance.

This game has a problem with graphics in general. If I use full screen mode on my system I'm unable to get back to windows via the quit function. All I get is a permanent black screen, unability to get the task manager, and all I can do is a hard reboot. So I play with windowed mode and it's fine. That's another strange thing you report from the game's behavior. Also I didn't know the map mode thing.

On my end I sometimes click on a system from the galaxy view, do my thing, switch back up to the galaxy view, aaaaaand it's slow. Save/quit/reload and it's gone. Usually that was the time when I would get the giant model on galaxy view bug, when it was still a thing. It is more frequent and prominent if using a heavy galaxy texture mod.

I suspect this game is haunted by reminiscent ghosts from being traumatized in its childhood by a mean GPU.

I haven't played stellaris in a little while was waiting for the next big dlc, however it's running slow as hell on fastest speed, same as speed 3 usually would, my computer just blitz through any other paradox game on speed 5, now it takes 2-3 mins for one year? what gives? sort of feels unplayable at this pace

edit: upon testing, speed 5 is EXACTLy the same as normal speed
Morning, I realized this is an old thread but I had the exact same issue as discribed and after messing around with it for literally hours I think I eventually figured out what was causing it.

I use a TV as opposed to a monitor and so the resolution is on max. The refresh rate had auto set to 24hz I bumped this back to 60hz and like magic the early game speed went straight back to how it should be i.e fastest is no longer exactly the same as normal.

This might not be the cause for everyone but given Google brought me to this thread and I seemed to find a fix I thought it worth posting here incase it helps anyone else.
