Valid positions are 0-10:

Plutocracy -X--------- Aristocracy (1)
Decentralized -----X----- Centralized (5)
Narrowminded --X-------- Innovative (2)
Free trade -----X----- Mercantilism (5)
Defensive ---------X- Offensive (9)
Naval X---------- Land (0)
Quantity ---------X- Quality (9)
Free Subjects X---------- Serfdom (0)

That is my preferred 1492 setup for pretty much any nation.

Wow!Some suprises there. Why Plutocracy 1? Never really thought of this slider as having a huge benefit either way.

Narrowminded 2 I can understand in a multifaith empire but if I'm monofaith I like to aim for Innovative = 7 to get the free manufactories (and still have fractional missonaries per year)

Free trade I like to go to 2 or 3 as a latin or in late game to get more explorers. Not worth so much in ROTW earlier as the other constraints are diffcult to achieve.

Serfdom 0 !!!!!! Thats a brave choice. Is this for mainly MP play or do you like revolts:D

See - I told you I'd missed that:D

When did that one creep in then - or have I been sleep walking for the last few months?

So why would JohnMK want to go 0 Aristocracy then - I normally aim to be high at start for the cheaper cavalry falling later. But never a priority

Holy shit! Bib isn't a Privateer anymroe!

Oh, and since BB now falls relative to the monarchs diplomatic skill's and plutocracy hurts your diplo skills (while aristocracy helps it), Aristocracy would in the long run help you lower your BB.

But the trade efficiency is nice, cause when you're really rich you don't care about that extra 13 ducats on cavalry, and all that like more trade is good way to get it. :D

What I would like is that the DP sliders affect the religious tolerance sliders. eg. Innovativeness-narowminded. When half-way net sum=0, when totally innovative +2 and when narrowminded -2 because settings also affect foreign policy.
Centralisation should also have an effect.

This brings up a question impartant to me just now. I am playing Sweden and have been naval 0 or 1 the last hundred years. Now it is 1620 and I have not yet had one single explorer. I have never experienced something like this before (I always go very naval).

The difference compared to earlier games is that I am very mercantilistic in this present game. In earlier games I have always been down to 0-3 or so on that slider (because of the added colonists).

Earlier you got explorers from three events, two of which were specialised events that triggered only if you were either very naval or very free trade. I am now wondering if this has been changed. Do you need to go _both_ naval and free tradish nowadays to get explorers?

Check the randomevents.txt It is now MUCH harder to get random explorers particularly if you are ROTW. Sweden should be ok though.

Key enablers are:

Trade tech =3
Naval tech =11

or Trade tech =4
Naval tech =18

with bonus explorers if free trade slider AND naval slider<4
and if free trade slider AND naval slider <2

Personally I hate the naval constraints as it makes exploration by Oman or Ottomans or China almost impossible.

Ottomans are probably only one with a chance of making trade 3 and naval 11 by 1550 to get an explorer.

No chance for the others unless China goes outward.

There are tech level restrictions on explorers. You need at least 3 in trade TECH and at least 11 in naval TECH to get an explorer. And you've got to wait until 1550 now as well:(

Thanks Derek!

I knew something was fishy when I never got any explorer.

Since your previous post was a little confusing, at least for me :), I just want to make sure

A. To get the "normal" explorers you need the tech advancements you are talking about.

B. For getting the extra random explorers you need naval AND free trade (earlier it was OR).

Or do you mean that both A and B must exist at the same time for getting any explorers at all?

The code is not very easy to read. C++, or whatever it is, is a hacker's language not a common sense man's language.

As I read it the two 1550 events need LAND 3 resp 2 or lower. The two 1600 events need LAND 3 AND/OR (I don't know which) MERC 3 respectively LAND 1 AND/OR (same here) MERC 1.

I'm not sure is it either or both. I believe its both that need to be less than 4 or 2.

Try going innovative in multiplayer Derek. See how long you last . . . (war exhaustion) (well, I have to admit the latest beta may have changed this equation slightly).

Further more, you get lots of destabilizing events going innovative. Bad government policies (reduce stab, also reduce trade/infra investment!), etc. (there are in fact many events linked to this slider), these are all linked to your degree of innovativeness. In certain cases it makes economic sense to go narrowminded, in addition to the missionaries & war exhaustion bonus. The tech cost increase is peanuts compared to these and in fact because of the way the tech cost system works -- even full narrowminded wont' really put you behind in technology. You just won't be at the forefront.

Sure you can be at the forefront, maybe not among Human players, but those who use narrowminded the most, colonial powers, will usually get that rich colonial land in India, NA, SA, some parts of Africa - to boost their money significantly.
