I've got a campaign I've always wanted to try, and I'm looking for any tips you intrepid holy warring monarchs might have.

I want to start as a tribal slav, conquer my way toward Christian Europe, create an empire, and convert to Christianity (thinking Orthodox). Not sure what I'll do after, but I may acquire a goal organically as the game progresses.

I'm thinking of starting in Bohemia/Moravia and conquering Carpathia before kidnapping a Byzantine princess and converting to Orthodox. Another possibility would be to move toward Rome and do something with northern Italy. Maybe start in Rus or Ruthenia, take Crimea, and then smack around the Bulgarians?

Anyway, any tips or ideas to make this happen?

Are you going for a Charlie or Old Gods start?

In the Charlie start you can start as the Mojmirids in Moravia. From there you can work towards forming the kingdom of Great Moravia. Attacking the weak Avars should give you even more land to expand into. And pretty soon you should come into contact with the Byzzies and their orthodox women.

I think it'd be cool to start in the Ruthenia area, and then settle in Bulgaria, after you capture Bulgaria, make it your primary title, and have two sons. Your realm will split, you'll be in Bulgaria, your brother will be in Ruthenia. Convert to Orthodox/Iconoclast. After this, you can capture Wallachia and Serbia, and then form the Empire of Bulgaria! The TRUE Roman Empire.

I recently did something similar. Started in Old Gods. Let the game play a few years. Poland forms, but soon after a chief in Pomerania gains independence. I jump in an play as this guy. You've also got 2 other guys with you that are peasant leaders like you. Not a good trait but it adds to the charm. I get myself a Duchy and then just rejoin Poland. Act as loyal vassal until it's unbearable and claim the crown. After a hundred or so years.

Poland grew pretty large before I even got the crown and reformed the Slavic faith. Eventually growing to a point where I could form the Wendish Empire, but didn't. A great holy war into the HRE for Germany lands me right into prime HRE vote land. Join the HRE rather than form the Wendish Empire. Convert to Orthodox and pass out my duchies to good Polish Orthodox lords. All who vote for me to be the next Emperor. I have religious revocation so my switch to Orthodox allows me to slowly pick off all the other Catholics left in the realm.

I did this mostly so I could move into EU4 and play as the HRE, but a very very different HRE it would be.

My next goal was to somehow get Antioch and Jerusalem so I could get the Orthodox Holy Order.
Edit: Also, another goal I set for myself from the beginning was that I would try my best to land and keep alive the dynasties of the other two peasant leaders I started with. Initially tough, they've both survived and rule the duchies of Pomerania and Pomeralia.

If I were you, I would try the Bulgarians. Start in 769 as the Khan of Bulgaria. You can flip to Bulgarian pretty quick. Wait for the ERE to be in a civil war and then launch an Invasion or conquest wars if you can. To convert you can just raid and kidnap a woman or wait for them to send a priest to you.

The true Roman Empire? Get in line! :p;) OTOH Bulgaria, Serbia and Wallachia can offer a lot to Constantinople.

I've been thinking of playing a Russian game where I'd start as Kiev, upgrade the duchy to an Empire, convert to Orthodox, and unite all slavic peoples into a "Roman Empire of the North" kind of thing.

Eh, it's an idea :p
