Well you have to have a limit and there will always be "the most efficient" way to build. It's completely up to you to decide if you want effectiveness or cute prettiness ;)

I'm sure you could get bigger with plopped buildings, but the actual zoning system seems hard coded to only allow buildings within 4 tiles of a road. You can't zone "deeper" than 4 tiles from a road. This, combined with 4x4 being the default building size, is going to result in a lot of very samey looking cities where everyone makes 8 wide blocks as the default. Building anything other than 8 wide blocks will be pointless. Any smaller and you can't fit 2 rows of buildings, any bigger and you have empty wasted land between.

Why even have zones if you have to plop skyscrapers. So annoying!

I assume there will be some growable skyscraper(ish) buildings as well, and that the really large ones that exceed 4x4 need to be plopped. This isn't entirely unrealistic either, in RL projects of that size do usually have the city government involved.

There will be buildings that are less than 4 tiles deep, so you don't have to go 8 wide. You can go bigger as well and fill the middle with some park or play ground or something.

I would like some kind of filler tool like CXL for parks and agricultural fields and meadows that would be able to fill an area as large as you like, and I hope the 4x4 maximum size isn't so hard that it can never be expanded upon by modders or in DLC so that bigger building might grow in the future. But a 4x4 size doesn't necessarily have to result in boring looking cities.

I would like both. If I want to build a real park, I would use the decorations, but sometimes I just want fill a bit of generic empty space , and the CXL auto-fill was great for that.

All I've seen so far are buildings that look medium density / taller medium density. I realise it's beta and more buldings are to come but the 4x4 restriction is so silly! Where are the "skylines"? Plopping some skyscrapers like in simcity is fine but c'mon..
