Well ive been away from the site for awhile and originally tackled a few Welsh AAR's. With computer problems and the fact i cant find my threads its time for me to move onto new pastures. I was going to look at the Arpard's but have decided to do them later due to an Arpard AAr already being up. I looked around to attempt something interesting yet still in my comfort zone, i do not want to heavily edit my game files and have fallen into the mistake of accidently removing an illness from my favourite prince / princess while adding a bastards mother as some young girl in my court. I have decided that any edits taking place will be done before the first tick of the clock and re-loads will only be done because of acts of god or sleep !

Aim of this AAR : To follow the av Sola Norse family. Each ruler will have a different agenda and I want to try to allow the game to take its own course rather than sit here thinking, "I want xxxx prince to be king of Norway by 1070" Im prone to this and it spoils my enjoyment of the game when the computer doesnt follow my script !! I want to be a passenger gently pushing rather than forcing history !

Game Settings : Using Velds Alternate Senario setup, Before the Conquest 1066. (Harold on the English throne). AI set to Weakling and Difficulty set to Hard.
Edits: In a little test run i discovered that the eldest son already in game aged 1 looks nothing like his mother and father so using the DNA i changed him to look a bit more accurate.
Also edited the apperance of a female character because the daughter of a king is not that ugly !!! Especially if i have to stare at her ! Also for some reason shes married into province C2609 but resides as a steward in Denmark. This kinda thing erks me so naturally i moved her back.

Rogaland ?? Why Rogalad ?

Well first, why not ?! I like to take characters that have not a spam wagon full of sons / daughters making the game somewhat easier and predictable. Also its coastal which allows good legitamacy for action in Scandinavia, Northern Europe and the British Isles.
The Av Solar family also has strong ties to both of the royal families of Norway and Denmark through marriage and blood. So there will be some legitamacy if either of these paths are taken.

The Count of Rogaland : Aslak Erlingsson av Sola : The Foundation Stone 1028 - 1066

aslakelingsson.jpg

As death crept slowly forwards the old Count looked about on his lands and knew that he had to pave the way for the comming generations. He could feel the icy chill on his bones and knew that he had months rather than years left. If his family was going to prosper he would have to look to mixing the old ways and the new. The Vikinger spirit must remain, but it must adapt to avoid being swept aside in a torrent by the Christian church and the powers of Europe.
He changed his lands enacting a fuedal contact and told his researchers to look into Farming methods, Seige Machines and Education. Rogaland had also traditionally been a county that relied on its farmers and peasent population. Asalak changed this as well giving the nobles and merchants power and crippling the church. Although he was a Catholic, as the law demanded he could not help but hark back to the days and the glory of his forfathers. It was not the Christ, but Odin and Thor who had lead his grandfathers to victory after victory. This he thought would be something that should be remembered regardless of the changes. His greatest fear was that if the Christ did not accept him into heaven would Odin still welcome him to Valhalla ?

research.jpg
laws.jpg

marfin.jpg
Although he had three children his wife was long dead. So the 74 year old count decided to marry for his county as upposed to love. Within a few weeks his new wife Maria Finne had been selected from the neighbouring Prince Bishopric of Bergunhus. Although she had just left youth and began her journey in middle age she had a brilliant mind for money and the concept known as mathamatics. She was quickly emplyed as not only the Countess but also as the County Steward.

faithm.jpg
The final thing on his agenda was to ensure that his son and heir was ready for the great undertaking that lay ahed of him. He questioned his sons faith and moral standing. Satisfied he took to his bed to await the cold chill of endless sleep.
As he died the scribes and researchers lamented a Count so interested with the persuit of intelect! It was decided that in the future a great libary could be errected in the Count's honour ! This libary would chronicle the line of av Sola.

@ Murmurandus :
This is going to be a narrative from the PoV of the ruler and then continue on.
Idea is to build a dynastic ruler over view as well as anything else of note.
Will focus on a main ruler but i may well switch characters if something to interesting comes up. eg: An inheritence resulting in conflict, a bastard getting an external title *shrugs* who knows , this is AI led rather than my modding fingers :)
Its going to be quasi serious as I do not really want to write a humorous piece, although if there is a chance for a joke its not going to be stone walled !
I also want to keep the narratives to a point and try to give an over view without waffle. But... lets wait and see huh ?! :D

The Count of Rogaland : Svein Aslaksson av Sola : The Blessed Farmer 1066 - 1076

svien.jpg

Svien was by no means a young man when he inherited his fathers title as Count of Rogaland. So much like his father he realised that any aspirations he had for his lands would have to be recognised sooner rather than later.
He made a few changes to his lands , most importantly he put the trust back to the peasesnts. This paid in dividends as a Fishing Warf was errected which bought in trade industry as well as food. The pesant farmers also discovered the two field system of crop rotation which greatly increased the yeilds.
The trust and time put into the land paid dividends.

1realm.jpg

He also realised his own mortality when his younger sister Alfhid died of a pestilence. He dropped the lifestyle of a younger man he delved deeper into the stories of the Christ and led a chaste life, swearing an oath only to lie with his wife.
As the years passed Svien went on to futher industry by creating a forestry. This would ensure that wood was processed and utilised as well as traded with neighbouring rulers. Tradegedy struck however when Count Svien was injured in a hunting accident. While chasing a boar his horse became spooked and threw him from the saddle, he crashed into a tree breaking both of his legs. For days the priests prayed for him as he drifted in and out of conciousness. It suddenly became clear that although the Count would survive the fall he would not ever fully recover. When the people breathed a sigh of relief tradgedy struck again ! The doctors discovered a infection in his blood which meant the Count only had a short time to live.
ill.jpg
A messenger was sent to Norway to recall his eldest son, Knud was away enlisted in the armies of the Norwiegen King. The 11 year old boy sat with his mothers bed side as Count Svien recounted his final will.
The count elected his wife, the beautyfull Ragnhild Svendsdottir Knytling as regent. With his three sons, Kund the eldest, Sigurd and Dag taking over the Countship when the youngest turned 16. The three sons were to work together as equals to ensure the land prospered.
With this his final decre the Count passed away. News of his deeds however had it was rumored reached Rome ! The Count was recognised and blessed as a model of Christian standards. How this would effect a man whos father ahd been torn betwen Christian and Pagan beliefs was unknown.
How this would effect his sons, was a greater mystery futher !

The Countess of Rogaland : Ragnhild Svendsdottir Knytling : The Matriarch Regent 1076 - 1084

regent.jpg

3sons.jpg

With the passing of her husband the Count of Rogaland and a demanding child heir to cope with, Ragnhild had her work cut out for her. She served as Ruler, mother and advisor to her eldest son who for the most part was more interested in "horseys" or "WORMS!" than the education he would need to become the Count of Rogaland.
Ragnhilds first real action was to marry away the late Counts remaining living sister. Although the sister was to old to produce an heir herself she eye'd the title for her own. A shrewd piece of bargining saw her packed off to Norway.

paranoble.jpg
A young noble soon arrived at Rogaland asking for acceptance into the castle and a place in the court. Ragnhild saw this noble as perhaps having other motives for his arival and sent the young Knight packing. This was said to have influenced the young Knud Slevinsson making him suspicious and some whispered paranoid.

As Knud approached his 16th birthday the country was prospering. The young man had now began to assist his mother and had taken on a few responsibilities in preparation for accepting the formal title of count of Rogaland. The peasents had discovered and utilised the 4 field system as well as Devine rights, Noble customs and Mining !
However the Rogaland had been influenced by the young Knud as it had also made advances in leather making, Shortbows, Slinged Javlins and Seige weaponary. Ragnhild made sure that these advances ensured a tile factory was made. The calm and peacefull life was starting to become enjoyable until the inevitable happened.

skept.jpg
taxk.jpg
A priest approached Ragnhild and asked that because the land was prospering so well perhaps the young Count Knud Sviensson would like to donate some of this money to the clergy and the church. This was an interesting predicament follow the path of his father or his grandfather. It did not take long for the now 17 year old Knud to come to a decision. He informed his mother, who somewhat agreed, the land should belong to the nobles ! Knuds skeptisim toward Christianity was duely noted ! With the money generated they began construction of a libary at Rogaland. Within this building was to be housed the knowledge of the land and the history and deeds of the av Sola family !

brillstrat.jpg
Knud's 18th birthday it signaled a few things. Firstly, it was one year until the youngest Dag turned 16 thus meaning Knud would formaly become Count of Rogaland despite officially sharing the title with his brothers. He decided to swear un-devided loyalty to his king, the newly crowned Halsten Yngling. He had grown up with the young king and was only a few years his senior. Thier friendship was something that had blosomed before his fathers death. He also graduated from the military at the top of his class. It was agreed that Knud was not only deadly with a sword but a brilliant stategist as well !

knudnwife.jpg
It was also time for him to take a wife ! Ragnhild thought it was important to keep the blood of futher heirs pure Norse so choose Kristina av Hedmark. The 16 year old girl was said to be a prodigy in her field !
During the wedding procedures some of the neighbouring Counts were outraged that Kristina had married into the av Sola family. She was seen as quite a catch and many others sought her hand. Knud simply looked on with pride.

sigcerne.jpg
As the second son, Siguard came of age his mother again choose a wife. This time she turned to the Ceniw family. Although they were Anglo-Saxon they held a different culture which harked back to the old pagan times. Following the King of England's son stealing his titles and lands the Duke fled with his family to neighbouring Vastergotland. Ragnhild choose the youngest daughter of the outsted Duke, Melyor.

dagsunn.jpg
As a final act, on her youngest son Dag's birthday she selected the grandaughter of the late Harold 'Harada' Yngling, King of Norway to be his wife. As the wedding ceremony finished Ragnhild abdicated from the Countship allowing Knud Sviensson to become Count of Rogaland. But the festivities had not finished. Kristina anounced the birth of Knud's son, inventively nammed Knud Knudsson av Sola !

I always like it when a first born son gets the same name as his father. Since that was pretty common during that era AFAIK (though may not in Scandinavia). Since Knud son of Knud son of Knud son of Knud can become a bit confusing :)

Nice AAR so far (that you use my mod is a big plus of course :))

The Counts of Rogaland : Knud, Sigurd, Dag : Sveinsson 1084 - 1101
Part One: Vision of the Christ

3sons2.jpg

knudstats.jpg

The three brothers, although cut from the same mould were different induviduals. Knud, the eldest found himself in a similar turmoil to his grandfathr. Should he take the traditional or modern path of the Norse man. His time under the tutorledge of his mother had made him quite a good leader however he favoured conflict over talk. He had picked up a cruel streak somewhere along the lines. Loved by his people yet feared, he was the model first born and a born leader of men.

sigurdstats.jpg

Sigurd, the middle son was more of a thinker but also a deadly warrior. Although still learning his trade he was as intellegent as he was brutal. He saw his role as a foil between the his two brothers often opting to be the strong silent type. Although many regarded him to be slow and sometimes a dreamer, this hid the fact he was possibly the most dangerous of the three.

dagstats.jpg

Dag, the youngest had followed his fathers path and embraced the Christ. He was as arrogant as he was proud and stubborn. Often his extreme views would cause tension between him and Knud. Despite this the brothers respected each other and realised they were key to each others survival.

In the year 1086, shortly after finishing his education Dag Sviensson av Sola had a dream. Laid bare in front of him was the wild expanses of Scandinavia. Not the mountains like Rogaland but the forests and free lands bellow Lappland. Within his fathers Countship the pagan tribes of Finno-Ulgric Russian's took control of a Norweigen territory called Jamtland. It was here where Dag roamed in his sleep. As he got to the bountyfull forests teaming with Bear and Boar he saw in front of him the pagan tribes worshiping a cloven hoofed creature. Recognising this creature to be Satan Dag stepped backwards in fear. As he stepped he tripped over a branch of a tree and alerted the pagans, as he looked up to face spears and axes he saw a gleeming light. The voice of the Christ echo'd down at him. "You must liberate Jamtland" With this revelation he woke bolt upright bathed in a cold sweat.

marchofwar.jpg

The Long March to Jamtland. As chronicled in the Libary av Sola, Rogland 1086

The next day he told this story to his brothers, naturally Knud was sceptical however the prospect of taking stolen lands back and increasing his power as well as that of Norway were certaining in his intersts. It took some convincing but with Sigurd taking his younger brothers side the army was drawn together and marched across Norway. The trek took close to six months however morale did not dwindle and the army some 2500 strong made it safely to the borders of Jamtland. Some whispered a mysterious force pulled them and kept them safe from danger. The march become something of a Romantic bards classic and was told as a feat of great endurance and passion.

battlelinesjamtland.jpg
When the army of Rogalnd led by the Brothers Sviensson arrived on the field of battle in Jamtland, they were met with a small force. The Catholic peasents of Jamtland had not been easily converted so the force of pagans numbered less than 400. Their war cheif, Salym took to the battlefield.
"Stand back Vinkinger of the South, your ways are not wanted in the Cold Forests"
Knud stepped boldly forwards
"Our ways ? Hah, prepare to meet my way. The way of Iron" He drew his broad axe and bellowed so loudly its rumored the very trees shook.
His brother Dag stepped forwards "You tresspass on Gods holy land, feel his wrath servents of Satan"
The armies met in Jamtland that day. The pagans were cut down to a man.
After the battle Knud regarded the mutilated corpse that he had challenged only a few hours ago.
"Dag, you say they worship a demon ? I see just the old ways"
The younger of the brothers regarded him "The old ways brother ? I see only Demons"
Knud walked away at this point, leaving his younger brother to revel in the victory for his Christ. Although he was a cruel man, Knud couldnt help feel like in winning at Jamtland he had cut a part of him away. As ever Sigurd looked on sombrely. "Talk damn it, are you mute or a fool ?" Knud insulted him somewhat jovialy as the insult was really aimed at his own concience than at his stoic brother.

kinghalsten.jpg
Before returning to Rogaland the brothers survied thier prize. Although they had come in with conflicting agendas they now held the lands of Jamtland. They embarked on the 6 month return to Rogaland, leaving only 14 brave warriors in Jamtland.
Upon reaching Norway , Knud approached his friend and leige , King Halsten Yngling.
" My King, look this is the glory we have won for you. And with great honor I will give the lands back to you. Back to Norway"
Halsten regarded his friend.
"The glory falls to the victor my friend, the Romans taught Europe that much. I will ensure the land remains with your family. Honor to you, av Sola !"

Authors Note:

I wanted to stay away from the whole Pagan / Muslim sacking because its something of an easy land hog method and would also conflict to much with this Pagan / Christain turmoil which started with the first two rulers.
I see Knud as a man torn between being all powerfull and keeping true to himself.
Dag i see as a revived modern Norse Christian eagar to pull things into the Christian fold.

With being on a difficult setting i find myself cut between not having enough prestiege to do anything interesting and having to squat till Dag let alone Knud is 30 before I have anything interesting to write about.

Thus Jamtland became a perfect of two worlds, bit anoyed i only landed 50 prestige and im worried im going to have to wait 14 years to start marriage hogging prestiege. I hope i have a few lucky events to speed things up because i see these brothers as an intersting plot line rather than the normal predictable Heir line conquer move on conquer.

I also like to keep things low key and "deserve" what i get, hence i wont be marriage stealing titles or going straight for a kingship right away.
Also, as predicted without taking a "power gaming" route or "breed pool" marriage im enjoying the game far much more !!

The Counts of Rogaland : Knud, Sigurd, Dag : Sveinsson 1084 - 1101
Part Two: Defender of Norway

3sons2.jpg

Following the recent events of Jamtland the brothers retired to Rogaland, a slight hint of tension had appeared to have developed between Knud and Dag following the incident on the battlefield the year previous. This was not helped when Dag confronted his mother asking her to give herself whole heartedly to god. Despite her husband's choices the eldest daughter of the old Danish king refused to be drawn into the matter. She did not want to futher the issues between her eldest and youngest because if it came to blows Knud would no doubt defeat his younger sibling. Although not swearing to the Christ she equally refused to acknowledge the old ways.
motherfaithskept.jpg

Things were not helped when Kristina , wife of Knud fell ill to her bed for almost two years. Dag muttered to anyone who would listen that this was gods way of punishing his brothers almost heretical way of thinking. Despite this Knud still saw himself as a Catholic Christian, just.. not as Catholic Christian as Dag would have wanted. Knud was vindicated however when through sheer force of will his wife fought the sickness and was well again. No one could argue that any devine power was involved, simply this was a case of Kristian av Hedmark being a remarkably strong viking woman !

intreagueking.jpg
Despite this there were greater issues at hand in Norway. The King Halsten, friend of Knud av Sveinsson was being conspired against ! Knud being a loyal friend and follower told his king of the plot, this resulted in some up-heaveal which seemed to divide the nation somewhat. Norway seemed rife for civil war.
The state of Norway was at least something the brothers could all agree upon and the issues between Dag and Knud seemed to die away.

magnusarmy.jpg

The issues between the eldest and youngest av Sola were however set to raise themselves again with the issue of Dag's eldest son Magnus. When he reached the age of 5 it was time for him to begin his education. Naturally Dag expected his eldest son to join the church, but Knud had other ideas.
"My brother, have you not seen the boys prowess ? He beat 3 other children single handed today. They set on him for sport and your son broke one of their jaws !" Knud explained.
"Dearest brother" Dag began cynically "My son, is within my jurasdiction, surely it was the will of god that he was protected rather than any strength of muscle"
Knud almost headbutted his brother there and then, a good show of prowess would proove that there was not some magic shield of the Christ protecting anybody.
Sigurd who rarely spoke looked on. As Knud left the room practically shaking with rage the middle of the brothers spoke calmly to his younger brother. So it seemed to have been settled. Knud got his will and Magnus was enlisted into the army.

realmprotector.jpg
There were still pressing matters, news reached the court that King Halsten had fallen ill ! It was said that he had weeks rather than months to live. His heir was but a 5 year old boy this was just the catalyst needed for the civil war to raise its head. Knud was approached by some of the loyalist Counts and Dukes of the realm. Together they pooled together and swore an oath to protect the young Hans Yngling when he took to the throne.
As predicted less than a month later, Halsten Yngling died in 1092, aged 25.
kinghans.jpg
norwaycivwarmarchadger.jpg

The civil war which was rumored to be a microcosm of what was going on between Dag and Knud began soon after Halstens death with the Duchy or Orkney swearing an oath of solidarity. It split from the Norway. The new king, Hans sent his armies to Orkney to quell the Duke, leaving his homeland somewhat exposed. The issue of protecting Norway did however unite Dag and Knud who under the same banner swore to protect their King.
In a single fell swoop the Duchey of Trondelag and the Counts of Adger and Hedmark swore to put the Duke of Trondelag on the throne of Norway.
Knud raised his army and marched on neighbouring Adger. He had fallen out with the Count, Olfaf av Agder some years previously and was relishing the chance to fight him, and of naturally, take his title !

battleagder.jpg
The two armies met on the field of battle, the brothers Sveisson leading a their men in unity. As the first volly flew from the archers the brothers charged head first into the heat of combat. The battle had not long begun before Siguard screamed a cry of victory. In his right arm he held a bloodied axe, in his left the head of Olaf av Agder.
victoryagder.jpg

battleagder2.jpg
The brothers began the seige of Agder waiting for the walls to grind down. Olaf's son who had inherited the title paniced, but in doing so trigured his forces to become awe inspired. When they least expected it the Marshall of Agder led his forces into a blind night charge at the Brothers army. They were consumed with Berserker rage and had sworn to die to a man for thier young Count. Luckily for the brothers a young noble nammed Skule was in charge of the guard, he quickly rallied his 200 men to repel the attack, as they withdrew the brothers recognised the mans bravery and took note of him. Because of Skule's reckless bravery the battle was won. But at a hefty cost in men. the Marshall Ottar was forced to surrender his forces despite swearing an oath of death. He was mortally wounded and wanted to die in the service of the King of Norway, not fighting against him. The entire Rogaland army looked on with respect as the obliterated Agder army knelt down and swore a loyalty to King Hans Yngling.
nobleinbattlei.jpg

Following the battle of Agder the civil war seemed all but over. The Northern Dukes had taken care of any other threats while the army of King Hans had defeated the Duke of Orkney. Still the issue now became apparant that their were three Count titles and three brothers.
Knud felt that he owed his life to his King and Country, Jamtland had and was property of the King and should be returned to Hans leaving the brothers with Agder and Rogaland.
Dag on the other hand felt strongly that it was gods land and should be kept by Dag to be raised as a Bishopric in honor of the Christ. Knud should keep Rogalnad with Sigurad taking Agder.

Siguards opinion, well. He kept that quiet choosing to watch his sibblings bicker. He simply walked away from them knowing full well that his brothers would not kill each other.

The Counts of Rogaland : Knud, Sigurd, Dag : Sveinsson 1084 - 1101
Interlude: The Count of Jamtland

3sons2.jpg

The arguement concerning Jamtland had now gotten to the point where Knud and Dag were no longer conversing. The tension had got so thick that even Sigurd was starting to get concerned that Knud was on the verge of just impaling his brother on the end of a spear. It was high time the three talked over thier problems Sigurd called them both into the main hall.
"Jamtland, was a gift from the Christ, how can we just give it back to the King? " Dag's voice boomed out before he had even stepped through the door.
"Jamtland is the property of the King, we relieved it from the Pagans. It should go to the King" Knud was keeping himself with strained.
"Damn you to hell you stubborn fool. I should disown you for your old ways" Dag pushed his brother to boiling point.
Knud drew himself tall and grabbed his great axe from the table "IF YOU WERE NOT OF MY BLOOD ID SPILL IT AT MY FEET"
"If you were BOTH not of my blood, id have killed you both myself" Sigurd finally spoke. Although it could have been a threat, the fact the middle brother finally got involved between Dag and Knud shocked both into listening rather than taking offence.
"We should make a comprimise brothers. It is imperative that we stick together. Do you want our sons to see how thier fathers acted and in generations av Sola's fighting av Sola's ? No. That is not the future i want for Knud, Magnus or Torben. They should be unified. We can solve Jamtland and keep everyone happy. The young noble, Skule Romer who won the day at Agder. He is loyal to the king, as you require Knud. He is a devoute Catholic, as you require Dag. He should be given Jamtland as a reward for his efforts on the field of battle."
Dag and Knud took this in and thought about it.
So it was decided, the young noble Skule Romer was given Jamtland.

The Counts of Rogaland : Knud, Sigurd, Dag : Sveinsson 1084 - 1101
Part 3: The Wrath of God

3sons2.jpg

With the brothers calling a sobring cease fire it was widely thought that it was only a matter of time before Knud and Dag went for each other again. The years however passed without incident, the brothers focused themselves on thier families and the upbringing of thier children. They kept a watchfull eye on Jamtland and Sigurd was overjoyed when the young Count Skule choose to name his first born, Sigurd in the middle brothers honour.
Things seemed to be working out until one fated day in 1096.
Dag rushed through the pooring rain from his parish just outside the Castle at Rogaland. He almost slipped in the mud on his journey but somehow managed to reach his brothers without major incident. He caught his breath as he met them.
"My brothers ! Knud, Sigurd. The pope...."
"What of him ?" Knud replied
"The pope..." Dag replied slowly..."The pope has called to arms brothers! In this glory we must answer his call and travel to the holy land!"
Knud looked at him, unblinking unmoving with a cold stare.
"But dearest Dag....we are in Norway. We are on Holy soil"
"BLASPHAMY BROTHER ! How can you say those words its a front on me, and a front on Christ"
"DAMN YOUR STUPID HALF WIT OF A CHRIST DAG. DAMN HIM TO WHATEVER YOU THINK IS HELL"
Knuds voice echo'd around the room and it seemed like the whole of Norway stood still. Dag regarded his brother with an ice cold glare of venom. Even Sigurd looked shocked and confused losing his relative calm for just a second.
"It appears then.." Dag began, "...that...my 'beloved' brother.... is a heretic" With this declaration, Dag turned from the chamber and began to leave, leaving a stunned Sigurd and a rather non bothered Knud standing in the audience chamber.
"Run to your stupid Christ then. Go Dag, mark my words when Odin blocks your enterance to Heaven, mark my words it is you who shall grovel to me brother"
Not missing a beat Dag retorted back.
"When it is you brother that is cast from Heaven's door to burn in hell. When it is you , dont turn to me and beg forgiveness. God will have revenge on this land, and its you Knud that bought this on us. May God have mercy on us all"
skepticalpope.jpg

True to Dags word, it was a matter of days before the Typhoid fever arrived in Rogaland. Its victims became blows to the County. The steward, Maria, aging wife of thier grandfather died first and Sigurd's youngest daughter Sunnivera fell desperately sick. When the Typhoid lifted just under a year later she was still ill. Her immune system destroyed by the sickness. This caused even Sigurd to begin taking Dag's side more often than not. Althogh the brothers Knud and Dag refused to look at each other much less speak. Diplomacy was performed between Sigurd acting as a messenger for the brothers because despite thier hatred they realised they still needed each other. But some felt it was only a matter of time before Dag finally came to the conclusion that he did not need Knud.

The second blow to fall on Rogland was the loss of Jamtland. Although Brave the count Skule was by no means a good leader. The Pagan forces rose in the East and steam rolled his county. The former Count of Jamtland returned to Rogaland with his family, tired, beaten and throughly embarassed.
skulescrewedup.jpg

Despite the curse's and what Knud figured was actually bad luck rather than any act of God, Knud looked to the future. He had never truely forsaken Catholic religion, he had just held to closely to the old ideals of his people. He was a traditionalist, like his grandfather and felt that the future of his people rested solidly in the past and the future. Sigurd could see this, but Dag was blinded by his faith and was his fathers son in attitude as well as apperance. Knud looked across the waters, away from Norway. He saw a country steped in Norse tradition and a Duke rife for the taking. Knud set plans into motions, pulling resources together for two years. It was time for the Vikinger ro rise again and Knud already had his targets.

Eh, it's actually against christian moral teachings to go waging war, even if the pope tells so. And what right does to the pope have to provoke war or violence?
Christianity is a religion of peace and love.

The Counts of Rogaland : Knud, Sigurd, Dag : Sveinsson 1084 - 1101
Part 4: Vikinger

3sons2.jpg

moray.jpg

thedukeofmoray.jpg

It was a bleak january evening and the sun had drawn in earlier than it felt was truely necesary. The watchmen of the guard yawned as he settled into his cloak for a long nights sleep. Nothing ever happened in the county of Mar. The area was under the juresdiction of the Scottish King, Donnachald Dunn Chillen who had been suffering from depression for years. As a result his lands had become ignored. For starters he hadnt kept his demise in check and two powerfull Dukes had been allowed to opperate completely independently. The Duke of Morray and the Duke of Lothian.
The guard yawned again and ignored the warning bell at first , figuring it was just the encroachment of his dreams. Then as the commotion got louder he realised it was infact in the real world. When he heard the warning shouted he couldnt belive his ears.
"VIKINGER, VIKINGER"
The Vikinger had not been seen in scotland for years, ever since Orkney and Caithness had become property of a Vikinger king. But sure enough he heard the word. Then he heard the noise as it nearer. The gentle sway and rise in pitch of a march " Huss, Huss , Huss , Huss " as it got closer he saw a banner held high above the army. A Catholic Cross adorned with Pagan symbols and topped with the skull of a Ram. The guard couldnt belive his eyes and ran to the main guard house to alert the watch. Once the guard had been raised there was an odd sense as the noise grew again quiter as if the Vikinger were ghosts, or god be praised... marching away from the county of Maer. What was their destination ? What was thier goal ? How would stand in thier way ? And may god have mercy on thier souls......

Knud set sail in November of 1100. Taking with him 4500 troops as well as his brothers Dag and Sigurd and his eldest son, Knud "the younger" Knudsson av Sola who had just turned of age. He landed in Maer on the east coast of Scotland around June of 1101 and made his way across Scotland directly to Morray. The Duke of Morray had been excomunicated from the church for some act against God. Although Knud had some respect and pity for the man he still only saw the man as a target and his land as a prize. Some whispered that the only reason Knud had not been excomunicated was because he was protected somewhat by the pious nature of his brother Dag, but the reality more than likely was that the Pope had more important interests than the cold , infertile wastes of Norway and its people, who although were Catholic Christians, were still low on the ladder of the rightious.

Upon reaching Morray, Knud set about his attack and found that the Scottish Duke had let his lands and his army go to waste. Although the Duke could muster around 5000 men Knud had the elemet of surprise. This was also somewhat lucky as Knud had lost a good portion of his army to the long march from Norway. When he engaged the Duke for the first time in Morray the battle was swift, decicive and some argued set the presedent of things to come.
batmor1.jpg

The cost for the somewhat ill equiped army of Niall, Duke of Morray was high, they were no match for the proffesional soldiers of Knud Svisson av Sola. The battle was a complete route seeing the Scotish forces driven from the battle field.

In a stroke of luck, or misfortune word had reached the Duke of Morray that a Vinkinger force was on its way. So the Duke had spent lucatively on Welsh Mercenaries. Unfortuntaly the Mercenaries were late to the field of battle and faced Knuds force alone rather than united with the Duke of Morray.
irishmercbatmor2.jpg

Although better equiped the mercanaries realised that they were out numbered and would be running into a slaughter. Respecting the Vikinger and not caring really so long as he got paid, the Welsh commander manovered his force off from the battle field early in the fight.

As the seige of Morray began word reached Knud that Niall Loarn had mustered his forces and was preparing a daring night attack on the Vinkinger force. Knud had seen this before at Adgar and ordered his best men to step forwards. Personally he led the berserker charge, catching the Scottish force just before they could make thier pre-emptive strike. The small contingent of forces led by the Marshall of Morray was obliterated by Knuds forces, the straglers who survived were said to number less than 100.
batmore3.jpg

Knud stood on the verge of victory, Morray was rife for falling. But the Duke had one last trump card. His vassel the Count Clemente of Bucchan led his out numbered force onto the battlefield. Although out numbered the Count carried with him a battle standard bought from the Crusade at Santiago. It had been blessed by the Popes hand, no army carrying the banner could be defeated in combat. As the battle lines drew Knud turned half an eye to his brother Dag. Now we see brother, "Your Pope against our battle standard of mixed Pagan Christian ideals" He began his charge in a slow jog and turned, "Surely Dag, we will lose today ?" Smirking he turned around and charged his enemy.
batmor4.jpg

As Morray fell, Knud marched on neighbouring Ross and claimed that as well. The Scottish armies fled the field as soon as Knud approached allowing him to sack the entire county. When the sun rose on the 14th December 1101, just over a year since Knud set sail for Scotland the Duke of Morray met Knud at Ross Castle. He knelt at Knud's feet and begged for peace.

The Duke of Moray : Knud Sviensson av Sola 1101 - 1102 :
The Vikinger Heretic

Knud celebrated his capture of Moray with the wedding of his eldest son Knud and his neice, (the eldest daughter of Sigurd) Morwenna. The celebration took place at Moray castle and many felt the Scots 'invited' to the ceremony were a little confused and bewildered. Not only was thier new Duke a Norseman who they could barely understand, but also he was said to have been a Pagan. If it wasnt enough to deal with a Duke hated by the pope, they now had a Duke who embraced the devil !

Knud then set about changing his cabinet and looking at the local nobles he had inherited as Vassels. The only major change to effect his Cabinet was the introduction of his neice / daughter in law and the introdtion of a new Steward , the wife of the former Count of Jamtland Skule Romer.
His vassels were also a right pair of snakes. Niall Loran , the son and namesake of the former Duke of Moray had already shown Knud his contempt and was a catapult ready to erupt. Sigurd warned his brother of the dangers of this man as his loyalty would surely be with his father the former Duke of Moray.
The other, Clemente Count of Buchan had taken arms vs Knud and was an Italian. That was close enough to the pope for Knud to imediatly tell the Count to pack his bags and return to Italy. The Count grudgingly accepted and handed his title to Knud before beating a hastry retreat back to Italy. Dag was outraged !
"Brother, you send a man chosen by the pope himself to return to Italy ? Thats like telling God himself to leave your lands!"

Knud couldnt help but chuckle to himself and was seriously considering Dag if he realised the bitter irony of his statement. To futher irritate his younger brother Knud enginered the mariage between Dag's eldest son, Magnus, whom he had already forced into the army to Affraic Crovan. Daughter of the Duke of the Isles, now Knuds neighbour. Although Gaelic, Affraic had been bought up amongst the people of her uncle, the Duke who was Norse Gaelic. Recognising things to come Knud did not see this as a problem. Dag on the other hand saw this quite insulting. Knud speculated that Dag probably wanted his son to marry some Italian god loving fool so the young Magnus was probably better off.

The night of the wedding instead of retiring to his wife Kristina Knud went on top of the battlements of Castle Moray to survey his lands. Drinking horn in hand he looked out towards the rising sun and shock his head, he knew his hangover was going to be epic. Still he had a lot of work on his hands. He was about to turn to head to bed, perhaps create another strong son if his wife was still awake, when he heard the door to the battlements behind him.
"Guard ?" he asked. There was no response, but the door closed and was replaced by the sound of a blade being drawn from its sheath. Knud laughed, he knew what was comming. Raising his drinking horn to the sky he said out loud.
"Skule, Odin!"
The blade slid into his back just bellow his rib cage and like a true Vikinger he showed no fear. Just laughed at his cowardly assassin as he was allowed to slip from the blade and toppled over the castle ramparts.
