On the contrary, the humiliating defeat of Robert and his brother Roger in 1061 at Messina itself, was my inspiration. They city folk lept to the defense of the town, and they fled the army of Ibn al-Hawas for fear of being annhiliated. Their ships were at anchor off Faro, but due to a storm they couldnt embark and were forced to huddle on the shore in the rain for two days, fending off Saracen attacks before they could make good their escape from Sicily.

Sounds more like a well-executed withdrawal to me. Then again, not as well-executed as Suvorov's, but hey, props for Robert, but Suvorov is a bit higher on my list. ;)

Them Berber pig-dogs better pay for breaking Serlo's leg! If only for seeing a CK version of Roger's Sicily (Roger the King, not the Great Count). :D

BTW, when can we begin on this RP? Not that I'm positively dying to begin (I'd love to, but first I have a chapter of my own to rewrite), but I'd just like to know. :)

Role-playing Game Out of Character. Im sorry, perhaps I should have explained this better to those who might be unitiated. I want to allow others, like yourself, to write their own stories and characters that take place in my AAR, etc, as the guidelines in the first post on this thread say. This thread is for "out of character" talk, i.e. me talking to you about the game or the story or history of that period. The other thread is for the actual storyline and people to write their characters and such.

Excellent update! I love your AAR..only problem is, it's soooo depressing when i compare my AAR to yours...maybe one day I'll be a writer as good as you! :D

Wow, thanks! Thats really nice seeing as I'd like to be a professional author when i get out of the Army. Why dont you contribute? You only improve your writing by reading others--and writing, of course!

Alhazen, you've written another great chapter. I wonder what Bohemond's goals are at this point, and why he is so stubborn about clinging to anonymity. I also wonder what the Great Count Roger intends... Is Syracuse really close to falling? If so, Robert's plans make sense. If not, Messina is doomed, or so it appears.

I'm currently experiencing a slight writer's block. Very annoying -- it takes ages for me to think up something appropriate, where normally it would take me the same time to write a paragraph.

Anyways, on to what you've written. That Lancelus fellow is too arrogant. I hope he'll learn his place soon enough. But Roger, well, I think he is mistreated by his brother. Dangnabbit, he was in Sicily first! Although I must say his latest move is a little impulsive.

Ive succeeded if Ive been able to portray Lancelus as the arrogant worm which he really is. As for Roger, he is the younger, and was very um..spur of the moment, let's say, in history. Just wait till you see what happens to him.

I'm still in the field by the way. Came in to shower, been 8 days without one! Been writing some updates at night on the laptop when I've had time. Enjoy!

The siege descriptions are very gripping and brutal. I'm anxious to see if Duke Robert's assault at Syracuse will succeed. I have to admit I am very confused about the three Normans who landed at Bari; I have no idea who they are or what they are supposed to be doing. Turold seems to have a lot of baggage in the metaphorical sense.
