A Proposal!

I have noticed there seems to be a great lack of a good RPG thread in the CK AAR forums. I would like to propose to host one based around my AAR in Apulia, if it pleases the community. I would open up my AAR thread for anyone interested to post in-character interactions, reflections, or stories based on the events in the game. All remarks on the game and OoC comments would be moved to this thread, for conversation and talk about the game itself. I don't know if this is a stupid idea or even if anyone would be interested, but if so, I welcome and encourage it, and have a few guidelines below to follow.

When you do post something on the main thread, I would request that you please do so IN CHARACTER. This means adopting a fictional persona appropriate to the era that the main story has reached and then recounting an episode, or just their thoughts or reactions to the way the history of our fairDuchy is progressing.

I would ask that no-one adopts for themselves a rank above that of common soldier, baron, knight, priest, merchant trader or craftsman. IF you would like to portray a count or Duke, feel free to PM me and I'll brief you. I think it might be interesting to hear how the macro-level game events affect the lives of the common folk and yeomanry on a micro-level. So for instance, you could be a Palermo shopkeeper, and write about the way the war with te Normans has driven up the price of the cloth you sell, therefore allowing you to send your only son to school. Or a soldier on campaign in Africa hoping to make it home to see his sweetheart once again, or a junior priest hoping to make his name as a missionary in the Holy Land or the wilds of western Ireland. See what happens in the game, think of something you'd like to comment on and then a situation that you can use to illustrate the point.

Please feel free to plan ahead, develop a dynasty or family that you can then follow through the 400 year narrative of the Grand Campaign.

It may transpire that the Duke/King notices the efforts of certain citizens and appoints them to prominent position or higher rank. Some might even reach the lofty heights of the Privy Council in decades to come and be modded into the game by myself. Alternatively, if they get mixed up in the wrong crowd, they may end up executed for treason. Such decisions will be the decision of the King and his Lord Chancellor, and should be accepted in good grace as and when they occur. Please not that the King does not like toadies, nor those who take airs and graces on themselves {so avoid sucking-up, or promoting yourself without the King's express say-so, or you might get chopped off at the knees}.

Characters don't have to be Apulian, or Norman, or even based in Italy or Sicily. If you wanted to explore the lives of someone caught in Africa during the War with the Normans, or in England, or Byzantium or anywhere else in the world, then please do so. Remember though, try to include some form of narrative-based comment on the events in the game as part of your creation.

I would also ask that you restrain your contributions to words and actions appropriate to the historical period. I have no objection to humour, the whole point of this sort of exercise is that people should feel free to express themselves and above all, enjoy themselves. But let's not get too silly. Keep it authentic, please. If you want to start a spin-off thread to explore a particular episode or set of characters in more detail and in whatever manner you see fit, then please feel free.

So, there we go. I hope everyone is okay with the guidelines as outlined. If a few people show intrest, I will post some maps and suchwhat, common names, etc in this thread if youd like some knowledge of towns and villages, families, etc.

Quite an interesting proposal you have there. I would be quite willing to partake in this, but first a question:

Is it needed to solely roleplay your own character, as in the RP forums of NationStates, or is it allowed to post small stories complementing your own story? I must confess that remained a bit unclear to me. Oh, and before I forget: are low nobility, such as barons et cetera, allowed without first PM'ing you?

Otherwise an excellent proposal. I suppose taking part in this has its obligations?

Stories, commentaies, letters, whatever you'd like to contribute. Your own scenes and stories would be great. Feel free to portray several characters that can, or not, be related in whatever way you choose.

Minor nobility, feel free. (By minor, I mean those not represented in the game off hand.) You could portray barons, for example, or a landed knight. If you wish to portray a Count or above, I'd need to send you their information and such. And I have no problem doing that either.

Here are some general rules for creating a character if you feel the need to actually add in-game stats to this person, or if you would like me to mod them into the game at a later point.

Age can be anything, whatever suits the RPG feeling of the scenario. 17 years is an adult who can produce heirs and has still a good life-expectancy.

ATTRIBUTES

There are two methods to give the character attributes.

Method 1
The character has 40 points to divide between six attributes.

Method 2
The character has 160 points, the six attributes are seen as levels, where each level cost as many points as the level (example, to take Stewardship to 9 wouldcost 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9=45 points).

TRAITS

Traits can be bought with "traitpoints". Some traits cost points, some traits gives points. A character must have one educational trait, and two other traits. Crusader is a trait that can't be taken initially.

A character has initially 4 trait-points to use (these are in addition to the 40 "attributepoints").

A character can not have more than five traits in any case.

The educational traits

Each character must have one educational trait.

The educational traits cost 0, 2, 4 or 6 points depending on the level.
1st level: misguided warrior, naive wirepuller, amateurish pettifogger, hole in the pocket You may choose *two* additional other traits if he takes a 1st level educational trait
2nd level: martial cleric, flamboyant schemer, tough soldier, proven dealbreaker, proven accountant
3rd level: scholarly theologian, intricate webweaver, knowledged tactician, charismatic dealbreaker, fortune builder
4th level: mastermind theologian, illusive shadow, brilliant strategist, grey eminence, midas touched

Other traits

The other traits either costs points or give back points.

The following traits cost 0 points:
cruel, deceitful, forgiving, generous, honest, indulgent, merciful, modest, proud, reckless, temperate, vengeful

The following traits cost 1 point:
energetic, just, lustful, selfish, suspicious, valorous, zealous

The following traits cost 2 points:
wise

The following traits give you 1 additional point:
arbitrary, bastard, chaste, clubfooted, coward, harelip, hunchback, lazy, lisp, sceptical, stress, stutter, trusting

The following traits give you 2 additional points:
heretic, illness, intestinal worms, kinslayer

The following traits give you 3 additional points *and* you may choose 1 more trait than usual:
inbred, maniac, pneumonia, schizofrenia

The following traits give you 5 additional points *and* you may choose 1 more trait than usual:
depression, leper, plague infested

Examples:
1) The character has 7-7-7-7-6-6 as the attributes.
He is a brilliant strategist and valorous, but suffer an illness.
2) The character has 6-6-7-7-7-7 as the attributes.
He is a misguided warrior, valorous, zealot, energetic and just.
3) The character has 7-7-7-7-6-6 as the attributes.
He is a proven dealbreaker, wise and generous

Have you added Adhemar Royce and Guy Savelli in the game?

Yes indeed, if youll look at the most recent character portraits I put up it shows them. Thatd be interesting to portray Savelli or Royce, or a knight from Royce's household or something like that.

Ah yes, ye olde Osprey. I got some of those, and medieval history is one of my favorite subjects in history, so don't worry. Watch out though -- those artworks are copyrighted, you might get issues. Well, if Osprey or the artist in question (Angus McBride and I think Christa Hook here) are anything like George Lucas. ;) I think the artworks are owned by Linden Artists -- not that I think they'd really care for the posting of a couple of scans online.

Is that point system required, or just for when you decide it's time to mod the character into the game?

Er..well..uh... Re: the pics, I lifted them from another fourm..

On the points system, no if you have something else in mind feel free to play around. Its just a base system thats not too crazy on uber-characters for me to mod figures into the game at a later date if need be---but dont worry, I'm no rules-lawyer as you'll see when I post some characters shortly :D

But is writing while ignoring this system also allowed? I don't write about perfect characters, don't worry. Imperfection makes things exciting after all :D

Edit: Wait, I see you didn't. The same books are on there as well.

Yessir, Yessir, you are most astute in your conclusion, Inspector. Took lots of those pics for my own reference.

And feel free to ignore for now, I'd just like to see some people writing and contributing. If there comes a point later where youd like to see the character hold a place in a court somewhere, we may tweak their stats, but I wouldnt worry about it for now. Have fun.

Ah, so you did take them from the Age of Vikings and Fanatics forum? And subsequently put them on your own ImageShack space?

Well met -- I'm the EB previewer over in the TW world.

Okay, enough OT stuff. Move on, move on. ;)

In response to your last comment in the main thread, Pirate, I give you:

Regardless, even though they may have not been in large use, I'm sure a few could be found. :D

I want to thank you for a great update. (Though I didn't recognized the event.... I don't have a lot of bastards in my game.)

And any father would be proud to claim Bohemond, especially with those stats. :D

Its from either the 3 JUN beta or SOLMYR's events, it adds 3 to every stat, and also improves health and fertility! Theres some bad ones too, once is "Bastard's life takes a turn for the worse" And they loose stats and gain illnesses or injuries. Another is like the first, but only increases stats by 1. Some nice stuff in there!

Well well, doesn't Bohemond look quite the honorable young man.

sleepyirv: You don't know what you're missing. :D

Seriously now, I hope Bohemond gets back to the court. If only for retribution. Mwuhahaha!
