I was wondering if there have been many AAR's devoted to the reign of a single monarch?

I am thinking primarily of EU III here, with it's ability to start at any date and randomised deaths but I could easily see it with EU II (& I) or CK. Clearly the writer would have to make sure it was a longish reign (by playing a couple of decades ahead if needs be).

I'm quite interested in the idea - again I'm thinking especially of EU III here - of writing about the decades long reign of Edward VI or James II or another brief monarch and seeing how they handle things. Obviously it might be fairly story and character intensive, but I don't feel that's a bad thing.

My Baden AAR was meant to be a game-spanning AAR but I ended it with the death of my first monarch in 1431.

I am doing one (it's updating very slowly). It's quite possible to do it, and it's often more manageable and realistic than doing a game-spanning AAR. I think it also lets you get down to the more nitty-gritty details, and to avoid game conditions to spiral out of control into silliness.

Has anyone made an EUII/III AAR that shifts from one writer to another with each new monarch?
Almost certainly yes, to the extent that I have memories of diary-like AARs where each new monarch contributed his own entries, so to speak. Also true for CK. But they are not really distinctive, so I am afraid I cannot immediately point to any examples.

There are AARs that are very focused on a particular instance or period. Although not a reign, therev'sA War Hero and the US Presidential Election of 1948 is a HoI2 AAR that concentrates on just a tiny portion of a game. Likewise, for an AAR that covers just a single war a good example is Lord Durham's Austria and the War of Spanish Succession 1700-1708 (Redux)

As for single reigns, I think no, because the temptation is, if it is a successful AAR, to continue. It should be remembered that phargle's wondrows Knytling tales was originally just the tales of Knud Knytling, but once he started he just kept on going. Another good example of this, from a more narrative standpoint, would be Arthur's tale by Rex Angliae in the CK forums, which was first just the tale of Arthur. That was its intention. But it has continued on after Arthur's death.

There have been AARs spanning a single war (such as Lord Durham's "War of Austrian Succession", if I remember the title correctly) and even AARs spanning a single campaign (my own "Hussite Lament") and even a single battle (my own "Bloody Fields of Kehl"). So I imagine it would be easy to write an AAR covering only one monarch. Are you planning to write it in the style of fiction, or biography, or ... ?

there are also the more recent projects, such as The College of CAARdinals in CK, where each writer plays as the Pope, and Military campaigns in EU2, where the players take a king/general and roleplay his campaigns, with hands-off pirate game in between them.

Both these games are very fun to write and watch.

I was going to throw at "College of Cardinals" as my most recent experience in reading such an AAR, but Fnuco beat me to it. That being said, I certainly liked the premise. With each ruler having a different writer you certainly get a different flavor with each one. Not to mention a different perspective and gaming style that lends an air of uniquness to each ruler.

I'm not being original i know i've seen it before, but how about one where someone plays for 1 king's lifespan, then hands it to the next person. I remember seeing a few AARs like that for Rome:Total Realism that were sweet.

Yep, thats what college of cardinals is. There were also some EU-1 AAR's that attempted to do this (or something like this) but I don't remember how much success they had. There was one EU 2 AAR in particular which was very well done in that style, I think they used Poland.

The only problem with that style of game is that everyone needs the same mods and file edits on each computer or the game could go screwy. However I personally love AAR's that work in that style, especially if you don't post your portion of the AAR until a while after the game was played, thus negating your successors the ability to learn why you did what you did. Makes for a very confusing and entertaining progression.
