Are you a crusader? That increases the piety penalty for Crusades (a LOT!). Possibly, if you have some other traits which decrease piety gain, the presence of the crusader traits takes it to 11...

Crusade expectations increase depending on the size of your realm .. the bigger it is, the bigger the expectations of you doing something to liberate the crusade target.

The best option might be to actually liberate the crusade target and the surrounding provinces and hope for a quick end to the crusade.

As far as I know there is no difference in piety loss between CK and DV ... it only matters on the size of the realm. Ofcourse having the Cusader trait just makes the expectations even higher.

Well, how far along are you in the game? The first Crusade is always to capture Jerusalem. You can also tell by selecting the entity that owns potential crusade targets and going to diplomatic map mode, and if they're at war with a lot of European countries, then you can be pretty sure that that's the crusade target. Off the top of my head, the potential crusade targets are Cordoba, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Rome, and maybe Constantinople.

As for "joining" Crusades, all you have to do is declare war on the crusade target. When you annex the crusade target and surrounding provinces, you get bonuses to your piety which can be upwards of 1000 if you have the "Crusader" trait. After the target is captured, then eventually the Pope will end the crusade (this can often take several months or even more than a year and can be sped up by owning surrounding territories too).

Almost always ;) I just had a game where the first crusade (which I started) was for Antioch. Burgos is another crusade target missing from your list. I think that's about it.

Provided I'm not sitting on a high war weariness, I declare war on them just for the bonuses to taxes etc that it gives. Very nice if you're in western europe and they never even come get you.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. There is no war weariness in CK, and thee' sno tax advantage to Crusading either.

Nick

He's probably mistaking it for EUIII, where you do get those bonuses. It would be nice if there were some more bonuses for Crusading in CK--say, cheaper armies (they're motivated by piety and prestige, not monetary gain), so you don't go massively bankrupt every time you fight the Muslims or Pagans and have to wait years (and years) to break even again, even with the various events.

That would be nice, perhaps paying 1/4 the amount or something. Because when your playing England and you have to venture all the way to the holy land, it's a long... and expensive journey that can leave you bankrupt for years.

And there is the event that either drains your coffers or lowers stability if you're at war for a long time ("This long age of warfare is straining your realm. What do you do? Attempt to keep up the current level/etc"). Closest to war weariness you can get (that, and vassals' armies going home).

If you haven't installed patch 1.05, then you won't have a crusade-target. The crusade in the patches before 1.05 ends when there are no more Muslim and Pagan realms on the map.
