Why name anything at all in singleplayer? By definitions in this thread, the names of energy, minerals, traditions, weapon types, all cosmetic. Why not allow everyone to name everything? I'd just like a better reason to be able to custom name something.
I wonder if you call your species _ and your empire __ when you play single. After all, it does not add anything.

And in multi anyone is going to look at civic and authority anyway, not the name, so the name is just as useless in multi, therefore there is no reason not to let the player change it.

Most of those are tied to government embraced ethoses not the actual government. They do not check for <name of government> and then go by it. Anything that has a spiritualist ethos would do, doesn't matter whether it is called "Priesthood of X", "Divine Council" or "Non Atheists Incorp".
Nope, they're tied to the actual government name. For example, a democratic spiritualist non-fanatic empire must have no ethic civics or they will have a permanent -5% happiness penalty for having a "secular government" on spiritualist faction pops. It's a really bad design, but that's how it is right now.

Supporting this notion.
I know that Paradox put some relevant effort into mapping specific civic-authority combinations to fancy titles, but my Materialist Technocracy was named Moral Democracy with no way of changing it, and that DID bother me for the 5 second I had to see the title during the game.

That said, I would kinda prefer them to not waste any effort on these kind of gimmicks, but instead resolve actual bugs and issues.

Yep. I was about to say this. Taking the Corporate Dominion civic turns your government into a Megacorp that will make spiritualists unhappy as well. The spiritualist civics always override other government altering civics. A Megacorp with Exalted Priesthood becomes a Holy Tribunal for instance.

Wat. You can already name your empire, why would you want to change the descriptor. Because it is a descriptor, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea can call itself a democratic people's republic all it likes, it's still a Juche-based dictatorship. "Democratic Assembly for Peace and Harmony" doesn't tell me anything about what the government is or how it functions. "Representative Democracy" or "Irenic Beauracreacy" isn't a name, it's a description and a description can't be something else just because you want it to be.

The only way this makes sense is if you're envisioning a government type that is not adequately described by any form currently in the game.

And the reason that democratic spiritualist is a problem is because there are no spiritualist civics that can be taken as a democratic state.

Regarding your example government: You chose spiritualist and pacifist ethos, plus xenophile (which is irrelevant for defining your type of government.)
Somehow, the pacifist ethos takes precedence over spiritualist ethos in determining the government type. If you really want to have a spiritualist/pacifist combo, you need to chose the fanatic spiritualist ethos, to override the pacifist once to get a spiritualist government.

It's the pacifist civic, Agrarian Idyll, that's overriding spiritualist and giving me a pacifist government.

I think the OP is making a confusion between Government types and the ability to name your empire (or country, or w/e you want).

Your government type is precisely what it means, your government type, there is no logic in renaming it to your pleasing because that is not it's purpose. J

Easiest example to give "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" is the name of North Korea's Country, it can be called that, but it doesn't change the fact that the government is a dictatorship, and if you chose in game the appropriate government, ethos and civics to try and replicate said government the game would show whatever's dictatorship (probably autocratic something actually, I didn't try it myself, it's an example after all), and you would be able to name yourself "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" just fine, BUT it would still not change the fact that your government is neither democratic or a Republic, or even of the People. And EVERYONE would know that you are not any of those things because that is not your government, even if you name it something else.

In other words, you can already name your empire, use that if you want renaming. Your government type is not something you can change at will, because it is not a mere "name", it's a concept.

One could argue that the game doesn't allow some specific combinations of civics and ethos that should be possible, but that is clearly not the point of the thread so...

There needs to be a reason to change this, and not other names which effect gameplay just as much. Why allow this, and not other things, is a perfectly valid question.

The flavour text is for Ai, as it eludes to their general behaviour and attitude. Which relates to their various scores and behaviour il.e slavery, robot liberator etc. The player is not affected by this in any kind of way. The game start text is down to ethics, not how your government is being called based on the Ai routine.
Nope, it's not just ethics. For instance Military Commissariat and Citizen Republic get different messages, despite both being militarist democratic governments, and those messages describe the specifics of how those government types work in the flavour.
