Ive played 5 games so far and in 4 out of five Tuscany pretty quickly devours Italy by annexing Naples and even the The pope. In one game the pope was granted land in northern HRE when his new seat converted to protestant.

Its just very odd, in previous versions that part of the world was fairly static with only Milan,Savoy,Venice in conflict. So what happened to Tuscany in AoW?

Tuscany had the luck, that Aragon lost Naples. Have seen it in some games, but not always, someone has to blob in that region, sometimes Venice or the Pope, sometimes Tuscany.

I think most of the problems in that region would vanish if Urbino was a vassal of the Pope, or would be at least be more integrated in the diplomatical net of the peninsula. At the moment, Ancona is a free province at the start, because it's not in a PU like Naples or in the HRE. You can literally declare war on them on day one, and only few would be concerned. With Ancona, it's easy to advance in the direction of Naples, especially for Tuscany.

Aragon tends to ally Urbino exceptionally early (with the intent of diplo-vassalizing them), so Ancona is not as free as you think.

I'm also not sure what's the problem in this area. I wasn't aware there was a problem.
