The ai in hoi2:dd doesn't really build or use nukes. As someone who considers nuclear weapons to be a very UNfun part of hoi2, this is actually a good thing. I'm wondering if such an option checkbox would be possible? Simplest way would probably be to disable all nuclear techs.

Well the problem would be the AI nuking you. Say you play as Bolivia and it's 1950 and youre finally doing well, then you get nuked a few times. Could put an end to your fun really fast.

This is assuming the ai is able to do this in AoD

I don´t want to sound disrespectful, but... you piss off a superpower capable of building nukes playing as Bolivia and complain that you are going to get owned hard?

Nukes or not, you deserve a few ICBMs if you do that.

EDIT: And if the superpowers start nuking each other to oblivion... well, it might have happened in real life if the circumstances were different.

How many times was a nuclear weapon used against another country?. Only twice and during the same war.

AI wont held itself, if you are at war against a nuke capable country the AI will keep nuking you until it run out of bombs, that behaviour makes no sense.

Because HoI concentrates on WW2, nuclear war is somewhat unrealistic.

The only two nuclear bombs ever used were used in WW2...I'd consider it the only nuclear war we ever had.

I wouldn't mind such an option, but if you really don't like nukes you can mod them out easily already. Make it impossible to research the right tech (e.g. id 5500) and - voila!

Yeah it's just easier for me if there is an official option especially if I play with friends. Then I don't have to go change files on everyone's computers, then change them back later.

I realize that it's not realistic for bolivia to take on the usa, but I'm just talking about fun factor. And other poster is right; nukes aren't very realistic in hoi2 anyhow.

It's not a super huge deal I just thought it would be a good idea.

It would be better even if the AI simply prioritized nuking high Infra/IC provinces or provinces with very large numbers of enemy troops *as part of a proper operation*. at the moment it simply nukes any random province even if its just an african province with nothing by a level 1 airfield and a single infantry division.

Why would it be nice?
If you can't afford to research it then you can't afford to have it. As simple as that.

Maybe you don't find it necessary, but having it enabled as an option would hardly affect you, considering you can easily chose to play with nukes.

In my opinion it is good when a game has many options, and I think that it would be esp. useful when it comes to the nukes in HoI2, since they represent a very different form of warfare, that many players might not appreciate.

An option to disable nukes would be good. Almost immediately nuclear weapons began to deter war. By the early 1950's the philosophy had already arisen that all foriegn policy in the nuclear age would center around avoiding nuclear war. This is the entire reason that not a single shot was fired between Soviet and US forces during the entire Cold War. Nuclear weapons create the relatively peaceful world we live in, and people today have forgotten that. Paradox's games are an excelent example, they chronicle the near never ending state of war the world was in until nuclear weapons came along. Nuclear weapons make powerful nations decide not to fight, because fighting is too close to using nuclear weapons and everyone's #1 rule is to not use them.

So just throwing them into a WWII game never works out well. Not only the AI, but even the human player does not have all the incentives in place to handle them well. Not having nukes at all is actually a good option considering that everyone's goal is to never use them. A good example is that "limited nuclear war" in real life is such a bad idea that both US and Soviet doctrine essentially banned it and called for all out global nuclear war or no nuclear war at all... another means of avoiding any nuclear war. But in a WWII game with nukes tacked on "limited nuclear war" is the about the best plan you've got.

I would actually remove nukes from HoI altogether and just give the US and event to nuke Japan and end that war if they want, but that isn't going to happen so being able to disable them would be good:)

HoI is also about altering history.
Also keep in mind that with the expanded tech tree and events, Arsenal of Democracy is now more than a WW2 game (which doesn´t mean WW2 isn´t the main focus).

AI wont held itself, if you are at war against a nuke capable country the AI will keep nuking you until it run out of bombs, that behaviour makes no sense.
Yet maybe the devs fixed that and we don´t know it.

All in all, I don´t really care about having the option. If it isn´t there, nukes are easy to mod out anyways.

Like someone else said, remember that AoD goes from 1936 to 1964, and fully supports it, unlike the Paradox games which made it longer but didn't design anything for it (more techs to research, new countries and scenarios, more TT's and leaders).

So AoD will be a nuclear game, and it will be something to think about. However, at the same time I agree, it would be nice to have the option to disable Nuclear Techs.
