I've read about all the fixes but I can't seem to get them to work. I'm a history buff, not technically inclined, and I was lucky to get the 1.03 patch applied. How the heck to I fix this? I've seen people mention opening the saved game file in a text editor but I have no idea how to do this. As for "unzipping" the automatic fix- forget it. Am I just screwed until the next patch comes out?

As for you Paradox guys...Wassup with this? You make a great game and then kill the fun for non-tech gurus with what seems like a pretty easy problem to spot. I downloaded the THIRD patch that has come out and this problem still exists? This may not be big problem for some people but for me (and others I'm sure), its huge. I didn't lay out 40 bucks to be a guinea pig or to have to fix problems that should have been fixed by you guys in the first place. This is like watching a film and having the projector break 3/4s of the way through. Then managment comes in and tells you to go up there and fix it yourself.

Next time, charge me 60 bucks for a game that works instead of 40 for one that doesn't.

Go to www.winzip.com download the software of the same name. All you will have to do is to double-click on the exe file and select "Express setup" (or whatever it is called) and then, download the automated fix and all you will have to do is to double click on it to open the file. Once open, select "Extract" and decompress the file in your save game directory (C:\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\Europa Universalis 2\Scenarios\Save Games). Double click on it.

Viper, I tried. It still crashes when I attempt to load a saved game. Thanks for trying to help. I appreciate it. Its nice to see that some people are good enough to try and pick up the mess that PARADOX left behind. Maybe I messed things up by trying to edit the problem manually and the game is just shot now. The bottom line is that no one should have to deal with this crap.

I don't know. Maybe there is just a presumption by the creators that everyone can just hang on the message boards and slap together any solution that is made by the devoted (and computer literate) fans of the game. As for me, I'm disappointed and angry. Like I said earlier, I'd rather pay more for a game that works as opposed to this. I will never buy another game with the Paradox name attached, and I'm looking forward to enlightening others on epinions.com as to what I think of their "finished product".

You're a bit off-target here. This particular problem was introduced in 1.03, it did not occur in 1.02. So it is not the case that it wasn't fixed for three patches. We beta testers did not pick it up as it only starts to occur in the middle or end of the game, we'll obviously have to test with longer games from now on.

I understand you are angry, but I do think you are over-reacting. EU and EU2 are great games and thousands of people get great enjoyment out of them. They do work, but like all large pieces of software they have their problems. Every single game you own has bugs in it, as does every other piee of software you own. I happen to think Paradox give better, quicker, support than any other company I've come across, and I've been PC gaming since Wizardry 1.

OK, it is really not that difficult. Start up Notepad or Wordpad (Start - Run - notepad), go to File, Open, and change the Files Of Type dropbox from Text Files to All Files. Navigate to the EU2 saved games directory - by default c:\program files\paradox\europa universalis 2\scenarios\saved games. You will see two files named after your saved game, one ending in .eug and one in .eug.cfg . Open up the one ending in .eug that you have the problem with.

On the first page you should see a line that starts with Selectable= . Inside the brackets after the = there are a list of three-letter abbreviations for countries. One of them is for the country you are playing, such as ENG for England. Delete all of them except your country. File, Save, Exit and you are done.

Thank you AndrewT

Finally something that explains how to fix it!
But just one thing. I dont know if its just my pc, but i tried doing as described and it worked fine until i tried to open the saved file.
Since i havent got wordpad installed i tried with what i reckon is notepad? i.e. anteckningar in swedish.
The thing is that the file is to big to open in there.
Anyways ill get my W98-cd out and try to install wordpad. Hopefully itt´ll work like a charm then.

you can use Word (or any other text processor) but it's a little more touchy as you have to make sure it will save the file in text format, wich most won't do by default.

In the saved games folder i saved it as the same name, ie. i overwrote.
And when i tried to save from within the game i clicked on "Byzantium" as the game was saved as. Then i got a box telling me i couldnt save it and something. It had three alternativs and i choose ignore i think.

there seems to be a bug that is yet to fix about overwriting a savegame. That's why in 1.03 you have the oldautosave and the autosave so one should always work.

Beta TESTERS????

" We beta testers did not pick it up as it only starts to occur in the middle or end of the game, we'll obviously have to test with longer games from now on."

I think you guys probably have lots of bugs that you missed because you never actually played the game. Games are very complicated and play balance is something you can't figure out playing around with a game, it takes many players a long time.

Some programming bug as obvious as being unable to reload a saved game reflects very badly on your quality control. Too often games are released before they are ready for play because of financial pressures, and we the unsuspecting public get stuck with a turkey, waiting for the patch.

If you didn't play the game into the middle or end, how do you know if the random events even work??

as much as events go there is a cheat code to enable the events "event #".

For the rest, every new patch changes something. This bug was introduced in a patch somewhere around January as it wasn't there before. Kinda hard to play a complete game in less than one week.

Beta testers have done an outstanding job and they are still doing their job, I included.
