When I play a South American minor, usually it's to relax and watch the rest of the world evolve, and maybe tend my country like a garden. But I've been thinking big.

I remember when early Vicky made the majority Latin American POPs either "Spanish" or Portuguese" and I suppose one of the reasons for creating all the new nationalities (Andean, Patagonian etc.) was to make uniting Latin America more difficult. Still, I assume it's not impossible for a Vicky expert. :)

What's the best way to unite Latin America? What country to start with? Which order of countries to attack? Which majors are your biggest worry, and how to counter them? Start off as Brazil, or leave Brazil alone? Does your Latin American empire have a chance at dominating the world?

In vanilla Vicky/Ricky, Brazil is probably the best nation to use if you want to unify the whole of South America due to its sheer size when compared to other nations. You'll rarely, if ever, go to war involuntarily. You can pretty much pick whoever you want to conquer and go for it. The only thing you need to watch out for is your badboy score, else a Great Power might have to give you a beating...

If you get VIP, though, you can at least create Gran-Colombia.

If you can buy up Suriname and British and French Guyana, you shouldn't even really have to worry about BB unless you've pushed up to Mexico.

Start with Argentina. Try to develope as much as you can and by 1840, attack Paraguay and conquer all the provinces you can. Then, By 1845 after developing a bit more and receiving inmigration, upgrade your army and attack Chile. Again, conquer as much as you can. After that, in 1846, you will be ready to attack Bolivia, which should be easy and conquer as much provinces as you can. When you finally have the necessary militar power to beat Brazil, attack Uruguay and annex them. I recommend waiting untill 1855 more or less, because in all my games they receive at least 1 million inmigrants. When you annex them, Brazil will ask you to give back their independence to uruguains. Say no and start the war. Try to conquer as much as you can and ask Miranda, Rio Grande do Sul(state) and if you can, Parana(State). After this, you would be able to buy the falklands, and to annex Paraguay and Chile. When you finnish this, recover and improve your economy. When you finnish conquer as much as you can of Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. Annex Bolivia and receive as much inmigrants as you can. Improve your army and your economy. By 1870, annex Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela. Then, you can create and event which reduces your BB and gives you the National Cultures, or you can create a new country(For example: United Provinces of South America, or something like that), you create the event the changes your country to the new one and gives you the National Cultures and by 1880 you will have an strong South America ready to beat the USA.

i'd say add 5-10 BB, lower relations with other GPs by 50, and add 3 mil to every non-national indian population. That should even it out.

Or write an even chain in which the GPs get a lets say 60-40 chance to declare war on you.

Thats the point.

Thanks for all the advice. I agree that modding a "United States of South America" sort of event sounds like a cheat, but it also sounds to me like a necessary solution to make it work in the long run and give our Vicky Latin American Presidentes something to strive for. :D

If we lived in a world where the German Empire never formed and Germany remained a collection of states until the end of the Vicky period, wouldn't we all be saying a "Three Hurrays" event sounds like a big cheat? Not to mention the "Collapse of Government Authority" events for the Italian minors. ;)

Use any country, turn them into a capitalistic democracy start bringing in inmigrats, transform some of them into capitalist, wait till you have a lot of factories, cash and you are ready to take everyone on.

in 1900 playing Perú i had a population of 70 million and i didn't conquer any other country. Without cheats or anything, just a liberal government and lots of factories.

Funny you should ask

I'm just about to do this with my newly fascist Uruguay.

Uruguay1924.png

The world in 1924 at the time of Alvarez's March to the Sea
(for more details click here)

But as for your questions
@What's the best way to unite Latin America?
Slowly, democratizing 2 January 1836 and focusing on your economy first and foremost; using immigrant labor; and by way of Africa after the '70s, so you can trade provinces around with other countries and release unimportant satellites when your BB gets high.

Starting off by buying up the remnants of the Portuguese and Spanish "empires" by using your new profits & tech would be a good idea, too.

Satelliting instead of conquering would be much easier, of course, but it's up to you whether or not that counts as a "conquest."

@Which order of countries to attack?
It would depend on the country.

Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay would all start off on each other because they have [edit: Platinean] culture. Ditto Columbia, Venezuela and Ecuador; and Peru and Chile. After that, Chile and Brazil, for their raw materials.

And if you're a noob, of course, Korea. :D

@What country to start with?
Anyone but Brazil. How easy do you want this to be? :p

But more seriously, Brazil would be easiest if only because it already starts with most of the provinces, so you don't get BB for taking them. Uruguay is fun because it's good for beginners & Argentina and Brazil both protect it, plus its official name is inexplicably the "Oriental Republic of Uruguay," but it only has one official culture. Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina all have two, I think. Anyone else have more?

@Which majors are your biggest worry, and how to counter them?
The UK, natch, but what are you gonna do? Building up your fleet would initially be prohibitively expensive for anyone but Brazil, and you should already have good relations with the UK and France so you can buy up their colonies in the Caribbean.

The Netherlands you'll eventually have to DOW, because it has cores on Suriname and Curacao.

@Does your Latin American empire have a chance at dominating the world?
Mine does. And it's fascist, so it's interested in trying.

@modding a "United States of South America" sort of event sounds . . . like a necessary solution to make it work in the long run.
A big pffffffffffffft to that. Brazil works fine, but you can probably do it with any of the states as long as you can get the immigrants flowing.

All of them have only one (in VIP at least, I think Argentina also has Patagonian). I'm pretty positive the same holds true for the remaining countries in SA.

I've decided to give the South American empire dream a try as Brazil (I'll leave starting with Uruguay to the experts.) :p

I've discovered an easy way to keep the Great Powers off my back. It seems they're only interested in stopping my aggression if they share a land border. So in 1836 I invade Venezuela, vassalize it, take all provinces except Caracas, then I give back to Venezuela all my provinces that border the European territories in the Guianas. Then I have a free hand to do what I like in South America.

What's the Portuguese for "You're in my power" ? :D
