This may be covered elsewhere (the search function sucks :) ), but can someone explain to me why, when a vassal is attacked, I dont get a CB on the attacker? A) Realistically, it weakens the whole vassal/liege relationship if the liege cant defend the vassal without wreaking political havoc at home B) Gamewise, it sucks, cuz your vassal gets toasted and you cant do a thing about it?

Is this WAD, a glitch, a 'to be fixed at some indeterminate date', or what?

Thanks

I agree that it is unrealistic, but I am not sure if it is in the immediate prority list.

Solutions here and now are:
Guarantee your vassals independence, or have them in a military alliance.

Yeah, currently, if you care so danged much about him, you should have good relations and an alliance; at which point he pulls you into wars with Hungary and Poland :)...

As annoying as it is to me personally, I'd say it's WAD, inasmuch as the people could theoretically care less about supporting your source of revenues in the name of a puppet king in Lesser Dunovia. These aren't integrated vassals in the sense of the feudal system, but rather tributary or puppet states that buy off your wrath every month.

Anyone know historically how protective, eg, the OE got of its client states in Wallachia when they would get attacked? Did they invariably declare war in its protection?

jay.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't have your vassal in your MA, though.

I just did a test. I started with a small nation, Ryazan, that I edited to have Byzantium as a vassal. Ottoman Empire DoWed Byzantium as can be expected. Ryazan received temporary CB on OE for one year.

In short you do get a temporary one-year CB on any nation that DoWs your vassal. That does not give you CB on all attackers. It does not give you CB on anyone who was at war with your vassal before the vassalship was established.

It does not prevent potential havoc trying to defend vassals, since one vassal may DoW another or a nation with truce, royal marriage, good relations, and/or same religion could DoW.

What is it that some do not think is working as designed (WAD)?

In my current game, playing as Burgundy, I have Lorraine as a vassal.... one of the Germans, I forget which, went to war with them...... when I noticed, I didnt have a CB, and checking the history, after I quit, it was well within a year of the DOW. I did not have an alliance with them, tho, which looking back is my fault.... but STILL! :)

You can just guarantee all your vassals, I suppose.

I have never thought of that, because the price was insane for no gain, as the guarantee disappears almost immediately. Has this been made senseful?
In the beta patches since 9 June 2004 I believe guarantees and warnings last 20 years instead of 5.

Unfortunately it is hardcoded. So have to reserve slots for powers that you want to be allied with, for smaller countries that you want to diplo-vassalise, and 1 slot for a vassal you intend to annex. The others you can only hope they don't fool around.

I also think that a liege lord should always get a CB on anyone who attacks his vassals. And that a liege lord should have a say in whom the vassal goes to war with...

As neither of that is implemented in the game I currently circumvent it by
1) cheating me some gold with the "Gift of the State Event"
2) using "Vatican" to give me some diplomats
3) Guaranteeing the independance of each and everyone of my vassals
4) Warning all of my vassals to go to war and paying the costs of 3 and 4 with the money from 1)

It´s only one game in which I did this consequently but I never had a vassal drag me into an unwanted war or not being able to deliver justified retribution to some nation attacking my vassals :D

Minor clarification: it applies to any alliance that a human player is the alliance leader, that the alliance can only have five of members in single player. A player can often times enter an alliance with five or more alliance members.

Here is a thread about the limits.

If the problem is not being told, you can activate the message logs to display a box for every DoW that takes place. it's kind of watching the news, and if the name of your vassal pops-up, then you know you have less than a year to avenge him.

Like there isnt enough spam NOW! :) I considered that, but rated my sanity ahead of the vassal's wellbeing :)

Notification of each DoW is more important than just for protecting vassals. It is also important for other reasons that you might get CB. Or you might learn a nation is going to be weakened by a major war so that you can prepare an attack. So this is one message box I turn on. It is not as if there are that many wars declared in a decade. Most of the wars happen when you load a game. Just dismiss a few message boxes and play on.
