Sigurdr 'Snake-in-the-Eye' Chapter I - First Steps: (867)

So here we are Denmark 867, so begins another AAR that is likely to involve death, maiming, STD’s and intrigue. Here is Sigurdr 'Snake-in-the-Eye' a strange title given the fact that he does not have a snake in his eye. Nevertheless he is the first member of the Knytling dynasty and the fifth son of Ragnar Lothbrok, and also the first person we are playing as in this AAR. He has some damm fine traits and well rounded stats, how long is this good fortune going to last?

First things first I quickly make Sigurdr throw his wife out of Denmark, we already have one son, and I have no intention of letting the realm fracture into a total mess by letting her sire more sons. Of course if Knud shuffles off this mortal coil, we will be in a large pile of excrement. But, let’s not think like that knowing my luck the RNG will spite me. Once the wife is out of the picture, I quickly change Knud’s tutor to Sigurdr, to make him into a fine money making Norseman.

Here is Sigurdr’s council, a fine motley bunch of mixed individuals who will aid him in ruling. He’s doomed.

Now onto my cunning plan, I intend to bring the Jarl of Jylland under Sigurdr’s iron fist (ahem, I meant wise and benevolent rule). However, due to the fact that he we are both part of the wars against Northumberland and East Anglia in dear old England I cannot wage war against him. Though while these wars are going on and England is weak its best for me to do what Vikings do best raid torture and pillage to grab some coin and prestige. We also make Sigurdr want to become King of Denmark mostly to give him unlimited use of the subjugation casus belli.

Tune in over the weekend, when we actually start getting things done!

And so it begins. Onward to a Danish crown!

Funnily enough, just finished playing to the point where I became the first Danish King. Things are going well so far.

Well, I have material up to 885 now with 7 chapters of varying amount of images in reserve so I do not have to play CK2 for a while. Hopefully, I can do the Jutes chapter tomorrow, and write a chapter or two throughout next week.

Sigurdr 'Snake-in-the-Eye Chapter II - Bringing down the Jutes: (867 – 869)

Now in order for dear old Sigurdr to have lots of prestige and gold to build up our counties we need gold, thus we send a large host of men to raid over the isles and the surrounding nations. Leon, in Brittany Cornwall, Wales and the coast of Wessex are my targets.

By early spring 868, the Sons of Lothbrok have won their wars for control over East Anglia and Northumbria, but can they hold onto the Isles for the next few years? Only time will tell.

After a final parting shot with a Scottish coastal raid my fleet returns home with some much needed coin and prestige, it is the first of many successful raids for Sigurdr.

Now as you can probably tell by the title we are bringing down the Jutes this chapter, for they are in a position of great weakness. They attempted to take over a pagan county however, they lost a battle despite superior numbers and have 500 or so men sitting on the county goal unable to siege it due to lack of men. All of this causes me to rub my hands together in glee, and laugh like a madman. Since I wish to grab Jylland in order to form Denmark, I quickly use the subjugation caulis belli, and call my vassals and allies to war.

Sigurdr’s brothers Bjorn and Halfdan basically tell him to get stuffed, maybe this is because I did absolutely nothing to help Halfdan and Ivar win their wars in the isles… Still, all my vassals join me in this war, and after a quick battle against the remnants of Jylland forces we quickly settle in to siege. Halfdan at this point decides to be even more of a douche and help the Jutes in their war but sends no forces to help him, so was their any point in joining the war Halfdan?

Well, I think this war in going to be won in my favor unless Jylland calls down the hand of God to smite me. Though it takes until June next year before I finally bring Jylland under Sigurdr’s rule.

Well we have actually achieved something this chapter, and things are looking up for Sigurdr.

Subscribed (although I must say that map mod isn't really my taste)!

It will be there for the next nine chapters I'm afraid, from chapter ten onwards I will not have the map mod. Also welcome aboard. :)

Off to a strong start there, with the Danes living under a single banner. What new frontiers will Sigurdr's eyes turn to now

Ah, soon enough we will move into Norway. (Insert diabolical laugh here)

Sigurdr 'Snake-in-the-Eye' Chapter III - Raiding and Holmgang: (869 – 871)

YTDBWeb.png

With Jutland, under Sigurdr’s power we can now form Denmark and become the first King in Scandinavia, (though we need more coin first.) In order to prepare for this and because his vassals practically worship a king who main skill in counting coins, I quickly make low tribal organization get passed before Sigurdr’s vassals hate him mostly because it will allow me to revoke titles if anyone decides to be a scheming manipulative bastard. That’s my job as the writer damm it! While, that is going on Sigurdr’s forces leave on yet another raid, once again raiding Brittany, Wales and even the Irish coastal provinces.

Bagsecg Jute, having not got over the fact that we effectively forced him to surrender his independence challenges Sigurdr to Holmgang. I accept, mostly because I want to see Sigurdr beat up Bagsecg and get some prestige. Only as a Viking can you get prestige by beating someone up. Still the RNG gods favour me and Sigurdr comes out the victor, and few months later the raiding party returns further stocking up Sigurdr’s coffers and bringing him one step closer to becoming king of the Danes.

Sorry for the short chapter, but I like to split up the mass of images into separate chapters and some images were really not necessary such as the raiding ones. Still hopefully I can make the next chapter longer.

Sigurdr 'Snake-in-the-Eye' Chapter IV - More Raiding, and a poet in born: (871 – 873)

Well in order to form the Kingdom of Denmark all we need is some good old piety and gold, just a few more raids and Sigurdr can place a crown on his head.

We set off to raid yet again and the next two years passes without incident. (Yeah we raid the British Isles and Brittany and nothing else fires in terms of events not kidding.) Well, finally in January 873 Knud comes of age, becoming basically a man who can make gold out of anything as well as having mostly well rounded stats. He is however utterly useless in terms of intrigue, hopefully we shall not get a knife in the back when he takes over from Sigurdr. I however, forgot that the poetry event fired and I make Sigurdr a poet. So, he is a Viking who enjoys hunting yet also enjoys composing Norse Poetry? CK2 logic at its finest. By the end of January 873, the raiding party returns with a sizeable amount of gold here’s hoping that with one more raid we can form Denmark.

Yay for another short chapter! Here’s hoping I can extend the next one.

I know this is a comedy AAR, but a mighty Viking also being a poet is quite accurate, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skald - taunting your opponents in battle with insults in verse form was considered highly appropriate for the Norse!

Yeah I actually know a bit about the Skalds. Just thought I would not mention my knowledge of it for comic effect. :)

Anyone else reading this AAR aside from Specialist, Toffee Guy and Loupe? Just wanted to know is all.

Yup I'm here matey. Been away awhile so just caught up. Looking good thus far: I like the game style sad the sardonic tone.
