Iraq
Military coups, followed by Arab nationalist coups and of course drilling oil and bombing Kurds. Also guaranteed fun with a certain neighbour. What more could we wish for?

2. Turkey
Slightly less coups, more kebab. Also impending Turanist deathsquads versus Communist Kurds street brawls. Also possibly obviously the honour of waging a war against a fellow NATO member.
3. Yugoslavia/E. Germany
If you really, really want 'em.

1. Afghanistan
Afghanistan is in a very weird point in History. It's before the Civil War and currently a nation of warring influences. The US and USSR both seek to influence the slowly industrializing country. It's leaders have at this point been adopting western values and attempting to mold the country towards it. It has a lot of potential, but it's got to navigate shark infested waters.
2. Nigeria
Nigeria is not yet a nation so I'll understand if you reject this one. It had the potential to be one of the wealthiest and most powerful African states following the decolonization of Africa. If it can survive the political turmoil of the 60's and onward it could become a powerhouse.
3. Peru
Peru has just undergone a coup by the military. It's leader won the populist vote and confidence of the public, however it's in a vulnerable position. Peru's recent wars against neighboring nations has won it few allies. Corruption runs rampant and the death of the current leader General Ordia could bring the country to civil war.
4. Mexico
Mexico is a country that still bares the scars from a civil war and revolution from decades past. The population remains poor, but the economy continues to grow. The social status of many is beginning to change. Mexico is still using the One Party System at this time and many chafe at it. The next century will be one of political and social upheaval for Mexico.

I'm tempted to ask for Abyssinia (last days of the Empire, maybe preventing the long, sad series of misfortunes of later 20th century Horn of Africa), but considering my long record of flaking out on such games, the limited number of slots, and the relative in importance of the country, I'll content myself with spectating.

1. Yugoslavia: ngl Tito is kinda an idol of mine (que several eyes rolling) and this period of de-stalinisation in the USSR leads to an interesting future foreign policy with the East. Having to straddle not just the first and second worlds but trying to lead the non-aligned movement is also a good challenge. At home while things are mostly harmonious atm, however the developing economy of Yugoslavia will become an interesting task to manage. Also I have done the research for Yugoslavia to play it like four times now.

BONUS: I have a collection of rare Titos.

2. Any gommie rebel movement that springs up later: I know my theory and tbh it would be easy work.

1. Saudi Arabia

A vital fixture in the conflicts of the Middle-East, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stands at the forefront of fomenting strife amid its neighbors and the Islamic world at large. Playing a sort of wealthy, well-off, and generally safe power that can torment others is usually only the power of such powers like the United Kingdom.

2. Iran

1953 is a pivotal year for Iran with regards to the removal of Mossadegh. Navigating that, in addition to playing a notable Shia power in Middle-Eastern politics could be fun and see about great conflict in the region.

3. Whatever interesting rebel movement is needed

In no particular order.
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

82yaYgg.jpg
Having enjoyed the greatest successes against the Israelis during the Arab-Israeli War, Jordan has recently adopted a Constitution (1952) and Parliamentry democracy under the liberalising reign of Talal. With the West Bank effectively Jordanian and relations with other Arab states smoothed over since the assassination of King Abdullah, the reign of the new king, the young and (as of yet) liberal-minded Hussein, is looking bright.
The Kingdom of Libya

130px-IdrisI3.jpg
Under the pious King Idris of House Senussi, the newly-independent federal constitutional monarchy has immense potential. Its oil reserves make it the most oil-rich African nation - investment into this sector can secure for Libya the necessarily funds to embark on an ambitious project of rapid industrialisation and construction of public works.

The All-Palestine Government

eiGg6LQ.jpg
To be the shaker and mover of Middle Eastern politics, the constant pain in the back-side of everyone. Sounds like me. The All-Palestine Government only has effective control over the Gaza Strip and is very much dominated by Egypt - but it has symbollic significance for Palestinians all over historic Palestine, and any Arab regime seeking legitimacy may well want to have it on side...
The 'We Don't Want ArabKho' Bonus:

The United States of Brazil

Tzg8jRw.jpg

Enjoying his second Presidential term - this time elected in genuinely free election - Vargas may survive yet and pull Brazil out of the financial mismanagement of his predecessor. With a relatively popular President (as of yet) unburdened by scandal or incompetency, Brazil might have a chance of not being shet.

1.
Bhārat Gaṇarājya (Republic of India): India, having just achieved its indepedence in 1947 as the Dominion of India, and the proclamation of a secular republic in 1950, is a young state, and already have had problems with its neighbour of Pakistan. India is set to become a strong, and influential nation in Asia. Add to this an interesting cultural history/heritage, and India as a country is extremely interesting in itself.

2. Communist Party of Kampuchea/United Issarak Front: Both the CPK and maybe more importantly the UIF played a role in the the First Indochina War, with the goal of freeing Cambodia from the French and installing a communist regime. While they historically gained little to no influence at the Geneva Conference (1954) in our timeline, maybe they could fare better in this timeline.

3. Union of South Africa: The Dominion which became a sovereign state in 1931, is faced with elections, and choices that could lead to either apartheid or "peaceful" cooperation and integration of the people of colour. Furthermore, it, in the future, will be faced with decisions that could lead to the Union becoming a republic or staying a Union.

Assuming applications are still open...

1) Turkey - Turkey's in NATO but is still caught between the US and the USSR. It also has shaky relations with fellow NATO member Greece, and the economy's starting to flag.

2) Italy - The economy's expanding and Italy is working towards European cooperation, but the groundwork's being laid for the Years of Lead.

3) Argentina - Juan Peron's still in power but opposition is growing rapidly. Can either try to keep Peronism strong or crush it.

1. Suriname
Enjoying the prospect of far-reaching autonomy as a constituent country with a parliamentary democracy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, this small, resource-rich South American country's prospects look bright. As civic nationalism, welfare and prosperity are increasingly visible in one of the most diverse countries on earth - both in environmental and cultural sense - one can wonder whether new third world countries like Suriname may carry the torch of progress as the world rises from the destruction of the world war.

2. German Democratic Republic

Auferstanden aus Ruinen

The eastern part of Germany falls under Soviet Jurisdiction after the end of the Second World / Great Patriotic War. Under Soviet Guidance, the German Democratic Republic shall build on its industrial and technological advancements to build a New Germany, a classless and prosperous society. Let us plow and build our nation, learn and work as never yet, that a free new generation, faith in its own strength beget!

1. United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is at an interesting turning point as it starts to come to terms with the decline of the Empire and its new found position in a world dominated by the two new Superpowers while still also facing significant change on the home front

2. East Germany
A building uprising in mid - 1953, the wall not yet here, and struggling with the resultant impoverishment of the country due to Soviet seizure of industry and reparations. East Germany holds a central and fascinating position in any look at the cold war.

3. Australia
Standing at a crossroads as it transitions from a UK aligned Dominion into a more independent US aligned nation

Dominion of Pakistan

Having previously participated as Pakistan in the 1st installment of Twilight Struggle and the vast interest and enjoyment I had not only gathering Pakistan's history during the early 1950's but the opportunities available to change history, mainly focusing on it's pivotal path towards either an Islamic Republic (using proper democracy) or a military dictatorship that revolves around coups and ill-advised wars with India.

Also, this guy down here has a plan and is obviously going to be glorious under my wing, so why not try it again?

Any interest in a 4th International player? The 4th International worked as advisors to the Algerian and Yugoslav governments, and Trotskyism was a significant force in many other countries, like Argentina, Cuba, Sri Lanka, Bolivia, France, the UK, and the US. Given some different historical outcomes (May 1968, stronger British Labour Party), it could well have emerged as an alternative to Soviet Socialism.

2. If not, I'd like to take the 26th July Movement. Mostly because other then Yugoslavia, it was the only chance for a socialist model which came to power indigenously, and as a result was the only other country with any significant socialist country with differences from the Soviet model. The prospect of a pan-American revolution is interesting as well, as are Cuban interventions in Africa.
