So, War of Religious League - protestants outnumbered catholics ~4:1, and Baden had Austria (leaders of both factions) at 98% war score. Baden also had military occupation of austrian terriotories in Swabia (vital interest), Austria was also almost 100% occupied. Still, war raged for several years, at this warscore level ~85-98% for protestants. And Baden did not sign peace with Austria.
Eventually all protestant nations started peacing out Austria, some taking part of austrian territory. One after another. Until all was left was Baden vs Austria and a couple of other states.
Emperor was victorious. From -98% to 100%.

Can anybody explain what happened?

That really sounds like the peace of westphalia situation should've happened. Maybe if we ever get the update that let's us tell the ai "hey I'm leaving the war soon so make peace" they'll adjust the peace.

Actually it would work great with a Sweden update since you know 'the lion of the north'.

Yeah, i feel that a propper rework of Northern Europe/Scandinavia would be much needed.

And such a DLC could also give some much needed flavor to the leuage war, and maybe also some flavor stuff to protestantism in general, as well as to maybe the Hanseatic leuge, and the Northern knightly orders!

i actually got the peace of westphalia in my current game. I joined the Protestant side as Catholic Portugal because I wanted to see if I could disband the HRE. For the first 10 years, I just ignored it (i'm in portugal, not my problem) and used alliance webs as a way to steal all the minor nations France had allied with just to annoy me; because we were allied in the war on the Emperor, he couldn't complain about me snatching Naples or Malta out from under his nose. After 10 years or so, the commonwealth fully committed to the war and was cleaning the clock out of the protestants, people were dropping off, France had lost all of burgundy, Paris was being sieged so I thought 'whoah, better get a move on it before i"m left holding the bag!"

So I landed teams in the Baltic and the Crimea, Poland peaced out just due to blockade, losing his capital and 1-3 forts. Started looking into who all the electors were to dismantle it, figured out its impossible because some of them were on my side, so peaced out myself. Peace of Westphalia then fired. Which was a shame, in about a year I would have rejoined the war except on the Catholic side as an excuse to bully the ottomans / my French "allies". Anyway, first time in 1600 hours I've seen the Peace of Westphalia.

Sounds the like the individual ambition of each country outdid the collective desire to enforce religion ;)
Curse those clever nobles for using the war to further their own means!

That shouldn't be an issue. Electors that are your allies count as controlled/occupied when it comes to dismantling the HRE. Not sure if that would apply with them just being on your side in a war, but you could still offer a temporary alliance just to dismantle and then break it after.

My guess is that the Carholics had bigger armies lead by few countries while the Protestants had more armies lead by smaller countries. The Chatholics went around occupying small nations and leaving them out one by one because the leader of the Protestant side wanted more than what he could get via what WS he had.

It didn't take long for the Catholic side to snowball it's gains.

This ain't a rare occurrence. For example, I've been the War Leader or been in wars where my allies were being peace out one by one as they accrued too much WE and lost armies. Nevermind the fact that our side was coming out on top.

AI doesn't coordinate. What you have is a bunch of AIs, each with their own goals. That's one of the reasons why people say that allies/vassals are worthless.

Now, I don't have screenshots to prove it (sadly), but I doubt that was the point. Catholics were pretty much crushed from the beginning. Austria was pretty weak - without Hungary and Burgundy, with only small PU over Bohemia, which lost Silesia.

They faced Ottomans, France, Commonwealth, Sweden-Norway...
From the bigger countries only Russia joined catholics, but they were not very strong (did not even conquer Kazan, I've neved seen such peacful Russia).
Massive catholic Spain, that integrated Aragon and Portugal and conquered Marocco - stayed out of the war. I don't remember but as I recall anglican UK likewise.

I guess just being at war together isn't enough, offer them an alliance though, that should do it.

Unless somebody was occupying their capital maybe? If Austria or somebody was occupying their capital you'd need to liberate it for them to count for dismantling again.
