So it seems that sieges are a new mechanic. Do we know much about this yet?

In Planetfall there were city garrisons which were helpful against roaming AI units! Hope this is included.

More seriously, we've seen the trait Siege Breaker on a number of high tier units, and that trait is about doing more damage to walls in sieges. So that's about it.
