During the antiquity era siege warfare was different from medieval warfare in many ways. Very rarely was a city taken by direct assault, one can find many examples of this through out that era. When soldiers attempted to storm a city or a town they usually sustained heavy casualties as a result even from a town lightly defended.

Some sieges took years to complete even when the besieging force greatly outnumbered the defenders. I hope this is correctly modeled in the game. The siege warfare in previous games was fairly straight forward and implemented properly, imo. (Though it could have been improved). However for this era it needs to be changed.

The defenders should have the option to sally out and attempt to destroy the enemy’s siege works. I know this is more on a tactical level, but I do not see why we should not have this option. At the same time, choose when to do this, more often then not, a sally to destroy enemy siege works took place at night to achieve surprise. So an option to do this at night or during the day should be available.

Another common way cities changed sides was through betrayal and treachery. This can clearly be seen during the Punic wars. Cities and towns changed their allegiance depending on who seemed the strongest or winning the war. It would add another great element to the game to be able to somehow influence cities or towns for them to come over to your side. Maybe implement it the way HOI2 has the spy system or even the way diplomacy works through influencing other governments.

In EU:Rome one can maybe influence or send a spy to another town to attempt to win over the towns support to declare its allegiance to you.

The building of siege engines was either done before marching out from home territory or while besieging the town. Hannibal marched out without any siege engines, but when he besieged certain town he had to build his own siege engines using local resources. When Scipio besieged Utica he did the same. So an option to build your siege engines during a siege would be a nice option or build them as one would raise troops in a home province.

Of course there should bonuses or consequences for either course. With siege engines your army would march much slower (as is already modeled in EU), however building them during a siege would obviously prolong the siege as it would take some time to build them and put them to use. The enemy should also be able to see you starting to build siege works and so would in turn sally forth to try and destroy them.

I am not sure if any of this will be implemented or was even thought of, but I believe it would add a great element to the game. Siege warfare was the norm during that era, massive battles were not. After the crushing defeats during the early years of the 2nd Punic war, there were not many battles on that scale. There were many skirmishes and engagements but nothing on the scale of Cannae. So this element of the game deserves some great attention.
