Either a map mode, or have it on by default.
If on by default, you can take the "edge color" of the empire and thicken it to be 1 system deep. This would include wormholes and active L-Gates; maybe even turn on gateways once a gateway jumping crisis occurs.
Possibly don't include federation/vassal borders as border systems.
Otherwise, a map mode where you can highlight borders by war status -- red for war border, yellow for peaceful border.
