This is what I came here to say
The games databases are huge and have been added to for a long time, the map itself has also been replaced 3 times (one per installment in the series). We revise the databases with every update (though how much we can do and where varies, there are many priorities for a game like this). The more information we have the more informed decisions we can make.
As an example one of the first things I did on this project was suggest some revisions to Danish landholders in 1066 (which started with me wanting a better representation of scania). Later on I ended up updating india.
