It shows there were "nations", clans or groups that did have an identity. Jok and I were commenting on your comment that there was no such thing until the modern era, and that everyone from England, France, Spain, Italy and everywhere else who was Catholic called themselves Romans and had no identity really. Which you're wrong, plain and simple.
