Etymology-wise that is exactly so, but does this represent the associations of parents giving their kids the name Jon? I honestly don't know, but somehow I think it's to them another, maybe less-boring form of an old favourite name - with an added reference to a pop-culture character.

Not really, loads of Jonathans I know are also called john the only Jon I know is meant to be called john but was awkward...
