Spoken like a true imported islander from the finance industry (I have never met someone born in the islands who refers to themselves as a "channel islander", the inter-island rivalry would never permit it). Jersey has a rich history during this period, was strategically important, highly developed economy for the time. In addition to this, the many harbours and fortifications of the island had huge impact on trade and shipping. The trade good could easily be furs, because the extreme rabbit population was often heavily farmed for both meat and for using in making clothes and wears.
I was born here, and I have no connection to the finance industry. Not that it matters.
Jersey was strategically important because 1) the local fortifications (Elizabeth Castle etc) made it highly defensible and a deterrent against French naval action in that part of the Channel and 2) the natural harbors and proximity to France made it an ideal location as a privateering base. Jersey was the most successful privateering base in the British Isles during the wars against France in the period. I don't see how the game can model this sort of strategic importance in its current state.
Do you have a source for Jersey's supposed economic importance? Afaik most of what Jersey produced stayed in Jersey, making it largely irrelevant in terms of international trade.
"Pandering to a certain crowd"? You mean the unbelievably vast majority who play their own country if able?.
There are probably less than 100 people in Jersey who even own the game on Steam
