As Portugal I developed a Personal Union and then integrated Spain. Around 1670 after colonization from both of us, I now own most of the world.

There's the Form Spanish Nation Militarily decision. Should I take it?

Looks like I get a much larger manpower pool and the bonus to taxes for a few years. But I don't like the idea of not being Portugal anymore.

Thoughts?

Militarily also makes you a cultural union, and that's worth quite a bit. Unless that's changed in a recent patch.... pretty sure it's mil makes you a union, but the diplo option (for Castille when Aragon is in a PU) doesn't.

I would take it.

Spain is a cultural union now regardless of how its formed
It will give you perma-acceptance in your homeland, so if anything there wasn't accepted status, it'll improve your situation in the richer lands there
This also turns you into Castile, basically, and you will get Castillian / Spanish events and missions from then on.

The diplomat that was working to integrate Spain is still doing so...after the integration has finished.

Is this a bug? Or does he just take forever to return?

Lucky. I personally wouldn't do it, if you wanted to be spain, you probably would have started as castile, but hey cultural acceptance, ftw.

Well as much as it disheartened me to not continue as Portugal, I did take the decision. The manpower and tax increase is just too significant I think.

It wouldn't have been as odd had Castille not already formed Spain. Maybe Paradox would consider adding some sort of cultural integration as well for these situations.

That being said, I'm still Portugal in everything but name and capitol. Colonies created after the decision are Portuguese and I still have their ideas.
