At game start historically, the Persian area was largely Sunni. The conversion of the region was a hugely transformative and traumatic event initiated by the Safavids after their conquest. I was excited to do this myself, now that Ardabil has the cool new government that gives a bonus to missionaries, only to find that most of the region is already converted for me!

I get the reasoning behind this - to make sure that Persia is Shia for historical reasons as Ardabil does not frequently conquer it. But this could just as easily be handled with an event, couldn't it?

I don't know what other people think, but the conversion of Iran to Shi'ism happened within the games timeline and was one of the major historical conversion events of history, on par with the spread of Christianity throughout the new world, the spread of Islam, or the spread of Christianity in Germany and Eastern Europe. I for one think it should be better represented, especially since the player is well positioned to recreate it themselves.
