Victoria 2 sort of fills the niche but it's still a different era. Any start date between 1946 and 2000 could work. But there are many things in the modern world that wouldn't fit in as just an extension of Vicky 2. (UN, NAFTA, NATO, NSA, War on terror, War on communism/capitalism, War on drugs. )

I don't expect this to happen but I think it would be pretty cool how about you guys?
I would imagine its clothing to most closely resemble Victoria 2 but with key differences.

This could be an extension of the cold war game pds always wanted.
But turning Nigeria in to a superpower while fighting a terrorist civil war could be pretty badass (no offense nigerians I know it's serious).

I just think it would be really interesting to play, and I wonder how things like Americas Imperialish amount of army bases in other countries would be worked out.

It would be tricky to make the gameplay compelling with the postwar solidification of national borders. Check your map paint at the door.

I don't know about this. Certain aspects of CKII, EUIV, and VIC2 are already controversial. The closer you get to the present, the more controversy there will be. This is a classic issue with Modern Day Mods, where some modders reference conspiracy theories and all politicize it at least somewhat (conciously or unconsciously).

There would be so many people angry about practically everything. Portray Russia as a dictatorship? Label certain countries as puppets? Even just the effects of political decisions would be argued about.

Would you cut it off around 1991? Or when?
Yes, around that date for playable scenarios. Then I'm not opposed to be able to continue on sandbox mode, but the game should be centered around 1945-1991.

There are a lot of problems with modern day games. Do you make ISIS a playable nation? Is Taiwan a nation or a state under China? How do you portray Venezuela's government? Not to mention events IG get dated really quickly. Let's say paradox came out with a game like this today. Would they have to patch in major world events as they occurred?

They can end it in 2012 to avoid isis and not add new events. Taiwan is independent but China has a claim on it. Venezuela is socialist, the bad inefficient kind. 3 years ago or even 10 is still modern age to me. They could do it

They could, but I'd argue that it'd still be problematic. A lot of controversial events are still in the mind of many people, such as 9/11 or the Arab Revolutions. There's also a fact that we do not have the benefit of hindsight. We don't know how the War on Terror ends, or if it ever will, and that make's depiction difficult. And make no mistake, if they wanted to make a Modern Day game, they would have to include 9/11, as it is the major event of the past 20 or so years. There is also the problem of a lack of information, as many military and civilian records remain classified. A Cold War game, on the other hand, does have the benefit of hindsight, distance from the events, and the opening up of archives from that era. It has a non-arbitrary end, being either 1991 (dissolution of Soviet Union) or 2001 (start of modern era).

I think that making a game covering our current time period will only be possible in the next four decades or so. Why? For the same reason many have pointed here already: recent events are controversial, but they tend to cool down as time passes.

I'll give a ridiculous but easy to understand example: imagine if (somehow) someone in early 19th century made a strategy video game featuring Napoleon. The game would probably be banned in Britain because of how controversial Napoleon was. But today, we have no problem in making a strategy game that allows you to play as Napoleon and annex all of Europe. The same thing applies for a modern era game. Depending on the way you portray current nations and ideologies, your game could be extremely controversial in some countries.

The problem with a modern day game is that you only have a few years of gameplay, and then you have to start extrapolating. Any GSG of the era will get dated very fast.

A cold war game, on the other hand, would be great, and an excellent base for modders who have the time to dedicate to keeping the game up to date as well.

I wouldn't play a modern day game because I don't think it's interesting. That's my opinion. I also agree with the fact that it could bring up controversies. Russian annexation of Crimea, American invasion into the Middle East, ISIS, you see the problem?
It certainly would be a different type of game where annexing Sinaloa would get you internationally condemned.
Palestinian-Israeli Campaign anyone? Sounds very politically correct.
In the last 10 years the only great power I can think of to annex land is Russia. I think even if it only runs to 2000 it'd still be awesome.

well actually most of these are actually quite capable of being modeled by HOI 4 even from what we simply just know now. but as far as controversy goes, the best way to model the touchy subjects (minus ISIS) is actually just by having options avalable the go with one side or a politically neutral stance.

Since the end of the Cold War, the world has never been safer or more boring. Great news for humanity. Awful news for grand strategy game designers.
