Should I start playing Vicky 3 now?

Here is the thing, if you enjoy mobile games where you wait down timers and then click something and wait down new timers, you will probably enjoy this game. If you like games where you engage in the world map like EU4, you will not like this game.
I see "Mobile Game" has already become the new "Mana".

Economic gameplay is a big one for me, along with colony building as a second.

I don't think the war systems will bug me too much in this game.
In that case I think you should jump right in.

I already did, because all you do is wait for timers to tick down, just like in Clash of Clans or something.
Should Hoi4 be considered a mobile game then, since outside of war you're mostly "waiting for timers to tick down"? Actually, I think you could describe others PDX games like this as well.

The difference is that in those game you have other stuff to do while the timers tick down, in Victoria 3 I just find myself waiting for the timers while watching something on the other screen because the gameplay is just not very engaging.

Not dissimilar to Vic3, then.

And aside from decisions and the espionage mechanic from LR, what "other stuff to do" are you talking about in regards to Hoi4? For that matter, what's with being so much against timers?

I agree that anyone whose main interest in GSG is moving troops around the world map between provinces should not play this game. Thankfully Paradox has bunch of other games, in fact nearly all of them, for anyone who wants to move troops around and about in the map.

Haven't played UK in 1.2, but it should be ok as a starter. You're powerful and technologically advanced from the get go but already got land all around the world, so it might be a lot. Other than that it should be a pretty standard experience, except for the managing of your dominions (not Canada, not Australia, South Africa and the indies company), but nothing daunting iirc. The opium war at the start you used to easily win in 1.0, not sure it always trigger.
I'm playing the UK now in 1.2, going for the military dominance objective, and I figured UK would be a nice start, since they already control India.

Opium War is still easy. The Qing are too far behind in tech at the start to pose any challenge. They'll likely get help from Russia, but they are no match for the UK either.

Other than that, I managed to pass pretty much every political reform with ease, and my economy is not only going strong, but developing faster than anyone can catch up. Laissez Faire + autonomous investments make for much easier micro, with the pops basically taking care of their own needs, so you can focus on developing your contry in other ways. Be sure to quickly research Pharmaceuticals and invest on Colonial institution! Getting it to level 5 makes the EIC become the British Raj, which is a puppet state, meaning it will pay a lot more taxes to you than the relatively autonomous EIC.

To the OP, I suggest starting with Learn the Game objective, and playing as Belgium. Their lack of land holdings, but significant economic and technological advantage make for a much simpler start.

There is a bit of exaggeration on both sides here. Yes, Vic 3 is not a mobile game, but there is not much to do.*

* It will depend on which nation you play with, but the early part of the game for smaller nations feels extremely empty. For larger nations, there is a bit more to do, but it is pretty repetitive and not very engaging (and takes time because you need to click a lot rather than the decision you have to make being interesting or complex). I think a lot of mechanics outside of the economy are on the shallow side. The economy would be fine, I guess, if there were other interesting things to engage with (and yes, there are other things, but they are barebone). Right now, the only "strong" part is the economy, and it cannot make the game on its own. I think Paradox could fix it eventually, but it is going to take time.

Wait a couple of years. Devs will go through trade-anger-depression-acceptance phases about mobile gameplay and warfare system and eventually we'll see true spiritual successor to Victoria II either with patches or via mods. As a bonus - you'll get several DLCs with discount from Steam sales when game will return to being a decent paradox grand strategy game.

I’m on my 12th or so campaign(10th in 1.2), playing my 4th great power, France, and I can say that Vicky 3 1.2 is a good game. It’s a great game if you are playing one of the European imperialists. ENG, FRA, NED are all a lot of fun as the colonization mechanics really encourage a race mentality.

It’s very satisfying expanding your colonies and then building a huge mid-late game economy on rubber and oil.

It’s also fun seeing the auto-invest take off and chase money, often times before you get to doing something yourself.

Trade is clicky, and it is boring in the early game. However, other players and I have discovered it is incredibly powerful and fulfilling if you play a country that can build lots of ports.

As far as the other things, war, diplomacy etc. improvements are needed as they are pretty opaque and shallow

My 2c...

I had pre-ordered Vic3, but struggled to get really into the game with 1.0 and 1.1 - hard to nail down what it was, a mixture of me being new to the series, UI, some bugs, and not getting along with some mechanics. Since 1.2 it feels a lot more enjoyable...private investments added a lot to the game, as they greatly sharpened the distinction between a free market economy and a planned one. The UI is still far from perfect, but vastly improved to the point that I'm at least finding the infos I need.

I have never really played Vic2, so that may mean that my impression is less relevant for the OP - but I haven't regret my purchase and I'm looking forward to the games future!

I regret getting Vic3.

The map is 100% superfluous to the game. Everything can exist in just isolated lists. There is zero meaning to locations or geography.

There is no flavour to any of the countries.

And as always, warfare remains an experiment which the devs refuse to admit failed.

There is not a single statement here that’s true, other than the first one, which is entirely personal.

The map is indeed aided by lists. A lot of lists help you visualize data that’s already on the map, such as declared interests. But they are both part of the gameplay. Sometimes I’m looking at the map more, and sometimes the tables feature the information I need.

Countries have very different starting conditions. A few feature events and situations that only make sense to them, such as Opium War and Sick Man of Europe. This is clearly something that will be worked on when the base mechanics are more solid (which they already are in 1.2, IMO).

Warfare is an economic ordeal rather than a tactical one for the most part. I love that there are no carpet sieges, and you can often assign generals to fronts, admirals to sea nodes, and focus on other things while they handle the advancing lines as they change. This fits what the game aims to accomplish quite well, and integrates nicely with the other mechanics.

I always pre-order PDX games, but I've learned over the last decade that you always enjoy a PDX game more when you wait for a while after release for content and bugfixes, so I've been disciplined and not opened the game once despite pre-ordering it.

Overall, is the game in a state where people enjoy the experience? Are there any major game-breaking bugs or quirks? V2 is my favourite game of all time, I've been waiting for V3 since forever and I really don't want to be dissapointed when I load up.

If the game isn't great right now, I may wait for a few more patches.
You.... pay in advance for a product that does not yet exist, but you don't play it at release? You...you realize that the price has gone down already? And you still haven't played it? And you already paid for it at the maximum price point? You're indulging the industrial pace that is causing the weakening of quality in the industry, rewarding the corporation for it as much as possible, and reaping not even a benefit of any kind to yourself.

1.2.x is in a good place, but I would recommend you to wait for few more months for 1.3.
I believe 1.3 will provide the quality which should have been of the initial release state.
I am 100% certain 1.3 will be the version that players will start to truly enjoy the game.

So, just wait for few more months. Always think about the delayed gratification for greater reward.
1.3 will be your sweetest marshmallow.

For my two cents, if the release version of the game wasn't doing it for you, then this is still not worth it. 1.2 is ultimately just a somewhat cleaned up 1.0. It doesn't feel different in any big way. So I'm inclined to say no, because you didn't get it on 1.0. 1.2 isn't a patch that's going to change anyone's mind, if it was already made up.

As to whether or not that feeling is something you want...that's obviously harder for someone else to answer and I'd really recommend watching a stream to get a better sense of the game than asking for a text post. If you really pressed me for an answer, I would say no. There are definitely fun elements of the game, don't let anyone tell you otherwise, but even by Paradox release standards V3 is really kludgey and awkward (Stellaris release day player here, so...). I quit every game by about 50-60 years in because the game literally just gets too frustrating to engage with.

But y'know I've also still done 250 hours of play. So when I say that there are definitely fun elements of the game, those elements are genuinely fun. I don't want to downplay the successes of the game where it works, it's just that by far the foremost emotion I associate with my playtime is frustration.
