Well, it depends on whether your are looking for a WW2 game or a game in the WW2 timeframe.

The things that sometimes happen in the new patch 1.4 are just so inlikely or gamebreaking, like Japan being at war with Russia in 1938. That means that Japan is kicked out of Asia early on and you wont see them for the rest of the game. No pacific war, no pearl harbor.

Also Germany rarely attacks in the West and just does nothing, same goes for the US.

The whole feeling of WW2 is just not there in HOI3, even with all these patches. I can only hope that a expansion will do some good, but my hopes are fading. :(

True.

Imagine Arsenal of Democracy in which you will be able for instance to have such finesses as historical Leopold superhaevy railway gun and make province bombadment of Allies in Anzio Pocket.
With HOI II engine!
Imagine AoD aircraft carriers with CAG and escort carriers with small CAG,no hang...ar...with carriers on paper simplified compared o HOI III,but carriers actualy smashing around like in real world.

HOI III engine:What a waist, what a waist on pushing deterministic chaos of geoplithics and relatively neglecing historical spices, and overcomplicating what was not needed to be complicate, while not finishing what was needed(strategic command for airforce and navy)

HOI III addon must be only with one purpose - deterministic /historical conversion of HOI III .

The "realism mod" is called DiDays Unique Units Mod (DDUU, for short). If you want to get fixes for the map, you can use it with the Map Patch Project created by Modestus. Both of those can be downloaded from the DDUU mod sub-forum. DDUU also includes AI Improvement Pack, which is nice to have.

Those 3 mods combined and some other small mods included in DiDays gives the game more flavour, historical accuracy, new units, and new counters. It's a no-brainer not to get it or at least AIIP.

It seems that what is fundamentally wrong with diplomacy in HoI3 is that how countries interact with each other is seemly random for several majors while pretty much all of the mid to small countries that were not in the Axis gravitate into the allied camp very early on. Historical events don't seem to matter very much and as a player you don't have any sense of co-operation with your allies who can do absolutely nothing at all or launch major offensives without saying a word to you. What this results in is a chaotic environment that is not only historically implausible but completely irrational. These problems are of course heightened by the opaque nature of the logistic system which the AI can't use effectively resulting in Japan getting it's ass kicked by Shanxi with amazing regularity.

In HoI2 it was obvious that the AI wasn't up to the challenge of realistically running countries as if they were your allies which wasn't such a big deal a lot of the time since you could assume military control over puppets. In HoI3 the AI is far worse then it ever was in HoI2 and military control isn't even an option which makes puppetting a nation far less attractive then it was historically which makes running an historically plausible game even less practical.

In a practical sense HoI3 isn't a simulation of the WWII era and the lack of player immersion doesn't give me the sense of being involved with some historical era or shaping history which is a major appeal of historical strategic gaming. The insanely bad surrender events make for wacky conclusions and nonsensical outcomes to wars that would kill my ability to enjoy the game even if I liked playing it in all other respects.

Since the designers of HoI3 set out to create a diplomatic engine divorced from reality or plausibility I see no reason to expect the diplomatic situation to change in the apparently final patch or in any expansion that may be released.

Having just gotten the game, I can say it needs tons of work to get to the HOI2 Level.

Get Arsenal of Democracy, which is released tomorrow. Get HoI3 when an expansion / realism mod is out.

Given that HoI3 seems to have been designed with a specific intention to avoid historical realism or plausibility it would seem unlikely that they would issue an expansion that completely reforms the diplomatic system would be unlikely.

While a map mod may take care of the many problems with the map and the DiDays mod may include enough events and rework the diplomatic system to such an extent that some sense of historical reality is infused into HoI3 such improvements reflect very poorly on PI. I can't understand why moders can make a significantly better HoI3 then PI which is what you seem to be suggesting. Assuming that those issues have been taken care of by moders (a very big if indeed) one is still left with horrid supply system, an opaque hierarchy system that is tough to use, terrible surrender events, sub par naval and aerial combat systems and an IA that is far worse then HoI2 DD in all respects.

Yeah, PI should've done the job DiDays and the Map Patch Project have. There shouldn't be a need for them in the first place. No offense to the modders, it's actually very nice work, but this should have been done by Paradox.

Agreed, AI, naval, surrender events, naval and aerial combat need to be improved. Also, they should make it far easier to organise your OoB... Right now you're doomed to micromanage a lot as a major.

From what I read in HOI II Doomsday forum before HOI III its quite conclusive to me that many people expected from HOI III to be actualy more polished and even more historicaly acurate HOI II,with legitimate "What-ifs"of course, and ...3D maps expecations quite often mentioned....That can be concluded roughly what people wanted before HOI III.

Many people allso wanted,it could be sad..allmost HOI III like this is...But its clear nothing from old forums could lead to conclusion that those would be majority, people that will like game that would intenionaly avoid historical realism and plausability.
How did they came to idea that majority of people would be delighted with This one, its not clear to me.

If they think HOI III addon should bring anything but returning to the tracks of HOI II in terms of semi-historical realism and even determinism, than I can only repeat one of the cool event.texts of the game:"Clearly, they are not in touch with the reality".

I recall seeing the sort of things you mentioned as being examples of what the fan base wanted but didn't get. Since PI people seem to read this board regularly I would assume they knew what the customer base wanted and decided to do something entirely different.

Of course back when the 1.4 patch was in the early stages of development Johan made it clear that he felt that HoI3 was pretty solid and what was need was some AI tweeking and a bit of polish. Of course it's clear that the problems with HoI3 are legion are and the game is far from being what HoI2 was. That reality leads me to conclude that PI had in mind for HoI3 is only part of the problem. An equally big problem is the lack of QA that went into HoI3, an unwillingness to do much about it and a game design that is far to ambitious.

Hopefully AoD will live up to it's expectations and in the future i'll wait a good long while before buying a PI release.

I agree. I might as well add that paradox created themselves the high expectations... reread the dev diaries or watch Johan's teasers. The game he advertises has nothing to do with what they released. Epic failure.

I am sure one day HOI III will live up to its expectations, but it needs rethinking, and realistic aproach.

HOI III as basicaly one geopolithical simulator ,is to ambitious, one that requires AI that is actualy anachiavable in this moment, and I think is anachiavable even in forerseeing future.Computers are simply dumb machines still. Its not Paradox guilt AI is stupid, but its to them to aknowledge this fact and aknowledge HOI III requires AI that is one scale above any AI any game in the world has in this moment.

As I mentioned somwehere else, HOI II performed well becouse HOI II as geopolithical simulator actualy aknowledges fact that AI is anachivable in this moment to do much more.So HOI II is we could say in reality with todays AI capabilities.HOI III is not within that reality.

In my country there is prowerb:"Dont change the horse that is winning the race".
This "horse" clearly is HOI II aproach to geoplithics, one that that is deterministic and maybee looks rudimentary in someones eyes, but one that is as I sad in touch with reality of AI capabilities in this moment.

We will see how Arsenal of Democracy will perform, in all this story, decision by Paradox to release AoD based on HOI II engine shows they still have capacity to understand the very same thing about I am talking now,and that will enable them to ,strategicaly speaking, keep iniciative in their hands .

A public beta is supposed to have AT THE VERY least ironed out the major bugs of the previous versions, otherwise it's pointless.

A beta isn't supposed to do anything for the customer. The goal is to help development, nothing else. When you download a beta you _work_ for paradox as a tester. Yes they've made this a possibility for all their customers but it is in no way related to your purchase of the game apart from that.
The finished patches are fine to complain about, they are part of the product you bought.
Complaining about a beta doesn't make sense. You've been invited to partake in a work in progress. If you don't want to then don't download it.
What is a beta and what isn't a beta is in no way related to anything other than what the developer wishes it to be.

Whatever dude. Complaining about major issues not being fixed does make perfect sense. If when a patch reaches beta phase they still haven't been addressed then there is a major reason to complain.

Just read this : My original plan was for 1.3 to be the "final patch" but obviously it wasn't enough for everyone. However, the amount of actual bugs in it is very small, and its stable. (Johan)

And yet these major issues were underlined during the 1.3 beta, to no avail, paradox just did not fix them.
