I have two currently, with a nice crop of healthy sons who hold kunis. Is there a benefit to handing them out or should I hold them as clan leader? I'm thinking giving one to my heir, that way when he inherits, it will be in my control again, to issue as I see fit.

Hey Juk,

I haven't dove into it all they way yet. But from what I have seen the acceptance of your nominated clanleader is based on influence based on the nominees acceptance by your courtiers and vassals.
For example it be hard for you to have your juvenile hier of your titles be sucessor to your position as clanleader aswell while there is your brother holding lands and being a pal to everyone around.
This might be cause for him to call a civil war.

hope that gives you an idea.

cheers

Loady is right. Perhaps the best thing to do is wait for your clanleader to die, so the new clanleader (you) will inherit the titles as well and then you can choose to give a title to his brother, perhaps weakening him with a Kokujin very loyal to you in one of his lands.

Wow... the complexity of politics in this game makes me discover new things every day...

I would say no.

That is one of the big weaknesses with the current version.

Without knowing it, I probably exploited a bug. I had as many children as possible, married all the children (women to dissolve other dynasties' lineage, men to grow them into vassals) As soon as possible, I distributed land to grand children, turning them into direct vassals.

The bonuses included by dynasty and same family are a guarantee of internal stability. I had dozens of direct vassals with very little threat to clan permanence. The worst threat I had to overcome was when one of my leaders caught leper, which decreased seriously his appraisal among the clan.

But nothing terrible. This game should give you the feeling of dancing on a tight rope, with a sword over your head. Not the case, and when keeping only direct vassals, well, the map is steamrolled.

Well, every direct vassal gets a vote on who is the next clan leader, yes? In my last game I had given out no dayimo titles, except to my own sons. I had some others, from conquest, but big majority of my direct vassals were kokujins. Now for some reason, suddenly almost all of the kokujins decided to vote for another guy as clan heir, a kid at that. Luckily this was at the very end of the game, so I managed to win before it became a problem.

Also weird in that, was that that particular guy kept taking new provinces.. and keeping them. He had 20, personally, at the end there. Thinking back, I'm not sure if he was a dayimo or not, which I suppose would explain it. He could have a very large retuine, so when I fought wars (and I preferred to rely on retuines), he took a lot of new provinces. If he wasn't dayimo, he couldn't hand them out.

Consensus being: Do not give them out, with 1 exception. Give 1 to your firstborn male heir. This helps him in terms of vassal opinion towards him while he grows up. There are no drawbacks to this, because typically if he dies the heirs' own heir will be...his next youngest brother. Who would be your clan leaders new 'heir' now anyway, to whom you would want to pass 1 daimyo title, etc.

So you have just the 1 title floating in perpetuity, held by the male heir of your clan constantly. If he dies, it goes to your new heir. If he inherits clan leadership, his own title rejoins all the other clan ones, and he should give one to his own heir to begin the cycle again. If you have no heirs, fix asap, preferably by marrying a 16 year old with a fertility modifier. Or 4. Retire your old wives with their dried up ovaries to monasteries if needed.

Giving them to anyone else is pointless because you really get no benefits from doing so, and experience potential drawbacks in terms of loyalty, succession, etc. The only benefit you get is another 3 honor, and the ability for him to increase his retinue, which you don't want anyone doing anyway as much as you can help it.

There are so many ways to bribe your heir's way up to legitimate heir's clan, it is only a trouble for the very beginning of the game, which might coincide (if you start with a small clan) with a low number of direct vassals so...
