Hello, together. Im totally new to HOI. I only played EU4 and Stellaris so far. When HOI4 came out a bunch of people were complaining about several parts of the game not working/being bugged. How is the state of the game right now ? I dont think it would be a big problem for me if there were some minor bugs - but if the combat system is tedious or boring/bugged...

It's far from perfect, but is getting better.
More pertinent is that while having some rough edge issues, it's still a very good game. Evidenced by Steam top 100 stats- not far behind EU most of the time.

After you've vanilla to get familiar- highly recommend mods though for a more competitive SP experience.

Yes, but add to wish list and wait for a sale. The game is fun especially if you use a mod like Expert AI 2.0 - vanilla AI blows. Somethings can't be fixed by mods like invasions/naval warfare and everyone is still waiting for PDS to fix these flaws. Still fun to play.

If you want a WW2 game, HoI IV isn't for you. If you want a diplomacy sandbox style game set during the WW2 era then yes, its for you. In other words, a typical multiplayer HoI IV game might have France, Germany, USSR, and America, Japan, and Italy all going Fascist, forming their own faction and rolling anybody that doesn't go Fascist. You will have WW2 tanks, countries, planes and much more, but not "World War II."

Grab Darkest Hour

I hate to beat a dead horse, but if you can get past the outdated appearance, darkest hour is far superior overall imo. Like in theory HOI IV should be better, it's just a lot of the games features do not work very well, and or end up feeling gamy.

With that being said it's not like I'm just being nostalgic about DH, since I only picked it up after playing HOI IV. Granted darkest hour is based on HOI II, which I played the ever living hell out of as a kid. Also it's worth noting that HOI II/Darkest Hour/Arsenal of Democracy have been out for ages, so they have had time to be polished to the nth degree.
It dosent matter how many awesome features a game has, if it's AI is lousy(or worse) at using them, then it's all for naught.

Being that you are new to HOI though, you may like HOI IV more than me since you wouldent really "know what your missing"

Honestly single player which most play is not that messed up unless you want to go a-historical. I think that's a pretty over the top statement.

No, that simply means you're playing in the wrong MP groups, the ones without a proper set of house rules and vetting.

Also, the OP would most assuredly start in SP, so your post is irrelevant on two fronts.

My advice to OP is to buy it on Steam Sale.

Well, single player has most of the problems multiplayer does on many fronts. As for house rules, well, you would expect a few dozen house rules for a board game which obviously lack the game 21st century top notch game developing technology. As for a game like HoI IV, a few basic rules would be understandable. But what kind of PC game has a hundred rules in it. What kind of rules? Well, banning half the countries in the game, saying what kind of division templates are allowed, saying when a sovereign nation can start a war it would like to fight, and much much more. I'm not saying these rules are not justified, they are needed in addition to third party programs like TS and Discord. My point is simply that this game is so out of touch with the realities of WW2 that you need 10+ people to sit there for 5+ hours and follow a ridiculous amount of rules just in order to get a good MP game.

Also, the OP would most assuredly continue on to MP once he realizes SP is hardly a challenge, "so your post is irrelevant on two fronts."

There's obviously a schizm between players who want to play a great WW2 game and those who want a purist simulation. It's like poltics or religeon or which team you root for -- you'll never convert somebody, so the discussion is just gonna be pointless ugliness.

Agreed. I was simply giving my opinion was all. I'v spent 650 hours playing HoI IV (no mods, only HoI IV) and these are the conclusions I'v arrived at.

I love alternative history books like Afrika Reich or 1900, so to me the potential historical craziness in this game is one of the great things about it. That's why I love the Keiserreich mod (the Reich has won WWI).
