Every time your ruler dies, there's a chance for him to inherit a PU minor directly.
Spain is huge, so you'll only get to a single-digit chance.
+2 from NIs, +1 from being Emperor, +4 from ideas, +3 from policies, +1 from your advisor and a chance for +1 from an event, +1 from a mission and +1 from Charismatic Negotiator.
The last three being semi-random. Remember, traits are weighted and Austria gets charismatic negotiators more often.

Can't remember the numbers, last time I checked was in my Saxony run and I didn't focus on it, but it was something like 150 dev per dip rep.

Long story short, everything up to 1500 development is easy to inherit as Austria.
You also get +5 diplo rep during the Age of Revolutions if you have the MoH DLC.

Where is the chance being displayed?
Shouldn't there be "Chance to inherit on ruler death" somewhere?

Either way, I know your guide. It's one of the only two guides I keep recommending as mandatory to players. A true masterpiece.

But last time I checked during this run, which was a few weeks ago, it calced development, not provinces.
You may be out of date.

Anybody got a save with a >50 year old PU and chance of inheritance being displayed?
well, that is a huge ass list, it appears at the end, it is 1% per stab, 5% if same culture, 5% per dip rep (result floored to integer), -1% per province

i dont know about the non PU inheritance though, never seen it, nor about the cascade inheritance you mention, both sound fun

@atwix as always, its hard to understand your writing, but, do you mean, on PU inheritance, the roll is saved on the monarch birth and cant be rerolled? Or is it only for non-PU inheritance?

hover over "personal Union with saxony" if you are player nation, or over the icon of PU subjects in diplomatic screen of random nation with PU.

it will disaply chance to inherit there mentioning dip rep and size, which is provinces.

if you do not believe me: check the number of size there versus amount of provinces of the subject.

Sorry buddy, but I know i'm right here ;)

I'm mostly angry that I can't find a save where I can see for myself xD

Okay, so I only have to pass the 8th reform.

Gimme a minute.

EDIT: Good news and bad news @atwix
You were right and you were wrong and I was right and I was wrong :D
Seems to be a theme when it comes to the topic of Personal Unions.

Yes, it is -1% per province. I don't know how I made that mistake.
However, even without semi-random dip rep (mission, event, trait) you can get up to 75 provinces as Austria against ~60 provinces as per screenshot.
Sidenote: Spain in my current run has almost identical borders and got Burgundian Inheritance on top of it. 93 provinces.

With semi-random dip rep you can inherit 90 provinces.
Not counting in stability, same culture and truly random events, which can push you beyond 100 provinces.

Russia is the only nation you can not inherit as Austria.

@atwix if I'm understanding that rewrite correctly, it should be possible to draw inferences about what my current IR is based on whether I'm set to inherit or simply PU a given DS nation at a given time. In particular when the tooltip states I will inherit a DS nation on ruler death, I could then check my current dip rep and stability to infer a minimum range for my current IR.

That could potentially be useful in certain situations.

@atwix as always, its hard to understand your writing, but, do you mean, on PU inheritance, the roll is saved on the monarch birth and cant be rerolled? Or is it only for non-PU inheritance?

the roll is saved for both when monarch comes to power, and probably (uncharted territory there) re-rolled every X years. So savescumming inheritances doesn't work for this reason, the roll was saved before.

basically, the inheritance roll is checked for PU inheritance, AND for random (vassal) nation inheritance. Then inheritance treshold chance is checked, which is dependant on dip rep etc (dip rep, stab, culture, provinces). Whoever has lowest inheritance roll of all the people that have inheritance treshold chance on an heirless nation in the inheritance tier, gets it. If you are still with me.

so basically, the inheritance roll for inheriting a random nation is saved on YOUR monarch when he rises to power, and then checked versus the tier, size and the heirlessness of any nation.

Its even hard for me to grasp, this entire inheritance theory was not made by ME, remember :p

I'm mostly angry that I can't find a save where I can see for myself xD

just start up a game in 1520 or so and check count of provinces of Norway or Lithuania versus size %

However, even without semi-random dip rep (mission, event, trait) you can get up to 75 provinces as Austria against ~60 provinces as per screenshot.

never said you were wrong there :)

so for a 14 diplomatic reputation Austria: if any Austrian PU subject has 70+ provinces, forget an inheritance even at 14 dip rep, barring stability and culture group influence.

The rule is you can inherit a junior PU that has dip rep times 5 in amount of provinces, if you don't share culture, and a bit more if you got +3 stab.

I said this :p

@atwix if I'm understanding that rewrite correctly, it should be possible to draw inferences about what my current IR is based on whether I'm set to inherit or simply PU a given DS nation at a given time. In particular when the tooltip states I will inherit a DS nation on ruler death, I could then check my current dip rep and stability to infer a minimum range for my current IR.

it might, but who would go that far :p

anyways folks, we should take this discussion to the PU guide thread
